Lucy Hyer, 89, of Cortland NY, passed away October 15, 2014. She was daughter of the late Mable Eggleston and Walter R. Hyer. Lucy was predeceased on August 18, 2002 by Ivan Hyer, her husband of 57 years, the adopted son of Charles B. and Lizzie Hyer. Lucy lived with her grandparents Walter D. and Belle Hyer who assumed her guardianship and parenthood, coming to live with them at nine months of age. Graduating from Moravia High School she entered the business world as a secretary at Atlantic States Gas Co., leaving there to work for the Office of Price Administration. After the government agency was dissolved she joined Gibbs Medical Clinic. Although she continued in the business world she did attain her practical nurse certificate. She worked at WKRT as receptionist and continuity writer followed by fourty years at the Cortland Y.M.C.A. as bookkeeper, receptionist, and secretary to the Executive Director and Youth and Physical Directors. During her working years she belonged to the Business and Professional Women's Club, the Eventide Group. She is a member of the Homer Ave. Methodist Church. She always had a great appreciation of music and in retirement spent many hours playing piano with her husband, Ivan. Beside music she loved the out-of-doors and gardening. She is survived by several cousins and best friends Jane Anne Fisher, and Barb and George Gould. At her request there will be no calling hours. A private service will be held at the convenience of the family. Interment will be at the Cortland Rural Cemetery. The Wright-Beard Funeral Home is serving the family.
