Hazel Mudge of Cortland NY passed away Saturday November 5th at the Cortland Park and Rehabilitation Center. Hazel was born in Cortland NY on September 12th 1925 to William M. Beach and Florence Bradbury. Hazel was a mother to Neil Craig Sr.'s five sons whom she helped raise. She continued to be a part of the boys lives and was known as Grandma Hazel to their children. She taught the grandchildren how to play pitch, rummy and scat. Hazel loved her animals especially her Boston Terriers Jo Jo and Billy as well as her cat Smokey. Surely some will remember the birthday parties she had for her pets. Hazel loved to crochet and she was good at it. She crocheted matching sets of tissue box and toilet paper covers made to look like dolls, Christmas decorations, pillows, hanging dishtowel tops and a variety of other things. She also crocheted numerous afghans and she received a Blue ribbon one year and Honorable mention another year at the NY State Fair. She took pride in her crocheting and people are still benefiting from her hard work. Hazel attended the Freeville Spiritualist Church but in her later years she attended the Jewitt Avenue Free Methodist Church with her sister Mary. Hazel was predeceased by her sister Alice Orlowske, brothers George and Robert Beach. She is survived by her sister Mary (Robert) Foster, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends. A funeral service will be held Thursday beginning at noon at the Wright-Beard Funeral Home Inc., 9 Lincoln Ave., Cortland NY, 13045. Burial will follow at the Cold Brook Valley Cemetery Homer, NY.
