I worked with Jane at Marathon Central Schools from 1986-1990. I remember her as a dedicated, hard working, caring, professional who truly cared for her students and fellow teachers. She was a spitfire, and, as petite as she was physically, had such tremendous strength, courage, and integrity in her work ethics, humanity, common sense, and gentle humor. She was such a supportive person and I looked up to her as a valued friend. I always considered her a special role model and trustworthy staff member, and her kindness and advice helped me tremendously as a new teacher at MCS. I’m so sorry to have learned of her passing. Jane Richards was a quality person and an unsung hero in many ways. She definitely had a deep impact on so many others, myself included. I was very blessed to have known her.

We had to write a short story/essay in 11th Grade English. My sister Joanie had just moved back to Freetown with her family and her daughter Emily, no more than four at the time, would walk (supervised of course between my sister's home and my parents' home. One day I watched this as she ran through the field wearing her little brown coat. I wrote about that day handed it and Mrs. Richards was extremely pleased with how the details came to life. I shared on my Facebook page, that I think we would be all amazed of how many people went through her English Classes. How many brothers, sisters, and cousins? It would be a considerable number for such a small school. To her family, thank you for sharing her with us. She taught so much that even to this day it brings back the memories of yesteryear. I always remember her "tea ball" in her desk drawer. I was a bit taken aback the first time I saw it and then it was explained to me what it was and how it was used. I also remember riding in the front seat of her little car during the school day one afternoon as she took me to Cortland for the Kiwanis scholarship award lunchenon. I was honored with their scholarship as the MCS 1985 recipient along with other 1985 graduates from other Cortland County schools. Thank you Mrs. Richards!!

I knew Jane as a County Legislator when I worked in Probation, and later as the spouse of Gerry, who volunteered in the Department. She was always very kind and thoughtful, and it was clear that she had great empathy for people and that hers was a life of service. She reminded me very much of the 9th grade English teacher who lifted me up and help change the course of my life, and I see from other tributes that she leaves a wonderful legacy. God bless her great spirit and comfort all who loved her.

Mrs Richard's was my English teacher at Marathon. She was a great teacher and cared deeply for all her students. Favorite memory was when she was scolding our class because someone was using crib notes for a book we were reading. I was so nieve I didn't even know what that was! Years later I found out it was one of my friends. When I was at college and had to write a paper my professor said this was the best paper I have ever received and used it as an example of what a paper should be. That day I thanked Mrs. Richard's for being so tough on our writing. Rest in peace until we meet again.

Mrs Richard's was my favorite teacher. She was the scariest, toughest, but the most dedicated to her students. As I graduated, I learned just how much she loved teaching and loved her students. I saw her often after graduating. Introduced my child to his mom's favorite teacher. It was an honor to know you and learn from you.
