Obituary of James E. Smith

James E. Smith Sr., 80, of 42 Church St. Cortland, NY, went to be home with the Lord on January 8th, 2025 at 11:11am, at The Cedar Run Nursing Facility. He was born on Sunday September 3, 1944 in Cortland New York. James was the son of the late Willis Smith and Bessie Rogers Ingram. James was a descendant of a Mayflower pilgrim, Richard Warren. Having lived in the Cortland area most of his life, James was employed at Smith Corona, Durkee’s Bakery and Overhead Door. James was an attendant at the Salvation Army for years. James enjoyed spending time with his children and enjoyed playing and watching sports. He is survived by his daughters Deborah Smolenyak of Ithaca, Melissa Brotherton of Ovid, Frances (Karen) McMahon of Homer, Karen Smith of Cortland, Jamie Smith of Cortland, Anne Barbarito of Homer; his sons James Smith Jr. of DeRuyter, Thomas Jenne of McGraw; 12 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, his brother Lawrence Smith of Knoxville TN, and several nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends. He was predeceased by two brothers, Willis Smith of Syracuse and Arthur Smith of Syracuse. Services will be held at Wright-Beard Funeral Home, Inc. on Wednesday at 1pm. Burial will be Glenwood Cemetery, Homer.
