Gary Henry, 77, of Blodgett Mills, NY passed away on Thursday January 16, 2025. He was born on December 30, 1947, the son of the late Gerald and Dorothy Snell Henry. Gary was a 1965 graduate of McGraw High School. On October 21, 1967, he married the love of his life, Mary A. Stone. Gary was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. Above all, he loved his family. Following graduation, he began his journey in the fire service, of which he dedicated 55 years of his life. Gary was an Eagle Scout, Cub Scout leader, a little league coach, and a McGraw school bus driver. He co-owned Priority Fire Apparatus and Service Center in Cortland, providing maintenance to emergency vehicles. Gary started his fire service career by joining the McGraw Fire Department in April 1966. He remained a Life Member of the Department. He joined the Cortlandville Fire Department in 1988, remaining a member throughout his lifetime. During his time with the Cortlandville Fire Department, Gary served as the Chief of Department, the President, and Commissioner. He largely influenced the establishment of the Cortlandville Fire District Station 2, known as the “East Side,” located in Polkville. Gary passed on his love and legacy for fire service to many family members. His son Gere served as Past Chief of Cortlandville Department and current Deputy Chief. His son Garrick serves as current Assistant Chief. His son Jason served as Past Captain and is currently a Lieutenant for the Loudoun County Fire-Rescue in Virginia. His grandchildren Seth and Josh currently serve as Fire Captains, and his granddaughter Sydney serves as a firefighter. Gary is survived by his children: Timothy (Stacey) Henry, Garrick (Michelle) Henry, Gerald (Wendy) Henry, and Jason (Jennifer) Henry: his sister: Valerie Keib; his grandchildren; Brittney (Dustin) Thompson, Austin (Alexandrea) Hammond, Joshua, Seth, Danielle, Sydney, Jacob, Madilynn, and Jacquelynn Henry; Nick (Skyler), Jordan (Allison), and Chelsi Cowen; his great-grandchildren: Jase, Emma, and Maci Thompson; his niece: Tonya (Dave Jr.) Teeter; and, his sisters-in-law: Pat Thompson and Laura Paquin. In addition to his parents, Gary is predeceased by his wife, Mary A. Henry and his brother-in-law, Joseph DeMann. Calling hours will be held on Saturday January 25, 2025, from 10am-1pm at the Cortlandville Fire Department, 999 State Route 13, Cortland, NY. A funeral service will follow at 2pm with Chaplain Dave Denniston officiating. A celebration of life and luncheon will take place at the fire department, immediately following the service. Burial will take place in the spring in the Forest Hill Cemetery, Blodgett Mills, NY.
