Please share a memory of Sally to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Obituary of Sally Ann (Sherman) Pitman Sally Ann Pitman of Lapeer, Cortland County, New York, passed away at Wynn Hospital in Utica, New York on Saturday, February 1, 2025, at the age of 81. She was born April 18, 1943 in Cortland, New York, to Claude Luce Sherman and Iva Madge Hunt Sherman of Hunts Corners in the Town of Lapeer. Sally tragically lost her father to World War II in France in 1944. Her early years were spent at the Hunt Family farm in Hunts Corners where she especially loved and admired her grandfather, George Atwood Hunt. Sally graduated from Marathon Central School with the Class of 1961 and was also a graduate of Ridley-Lowell Business Institute. On August 11, 1962, Sally married Ralph Keith Pitman (Ralph predeceased Sally - December 9, 2020); she enjoyed more than 58 years of marriage to her love, best friend, companion, and partner in every way. In 1973, Ralph and Sally made their home on Parker Street in Lapeer and then spent their time and most of their lives enjoying everything about their rural life in the location that they both deemed "the single best place on earth". While concentrating on her family and homestead in Lapeer, Sally spent some time employed as well, with her favorite assignment being on the staff of State Assemblyman Clarence Rappleyea for a time. In addition to her husband, her children, her grandchildren, and her great grandchildren, Sally enjoyed music, art, animals, her home and all varieties of plants, trees, and flowers. Sally Pitman was always interested in government and politics, and often liked to respectfully discuss current topics of interest with family, friends, and sometimes others. She was also a humble and quiet Christian, living out the teachings of Jesus without calling attention to herself or public faith commitments, but demonstrating her values within her personal interactions. Sally is survived by her sons John M. (Denise) Pitman and Keith D. (Nancy) Pitman, who she proudly raised, supported and cared for. She also is survived by seven grandchildren: Lacey (Jim) Mikochik, Marci (Hollis) Tompkins, Lucas (Rosemary), Isaac, Simon (Sydney), Therese and Rose Pitman. Her four great grandchildren are: Jameson David Tomkins, Della Rose Tompkins, Laura Betty Tompkins, and Ivy Jane Pitman. Also surviving are her sister Wendy (Gary) Wakula and brother William E. (Vicki Lewis) Randall III. The daughter of Sally's late cousin Charlotte (Ronald) Morgan Schuller, Janice Schuller of Hanover, Maryland, survives her as a beloved family member. Sally was furthermore predeceased by her parents, her stepfather William E. Randall II, and her sister Barbara Randall. Arrangements will be handled by Wright Beard Funeral Home Cortland, New York. Per Sally's wishes there will be no calling hours. Burial will take place at the Parker Street Cemetery, Lapeer, New York in the Spring of 2025 where a graveside service will be held and she will be laid to rest next to Ralph Keith Pitman. In Sally's honor and memory, donations can be made to: MAVAC, 2 Peck Street, Marathon, New York, 13803, and Refuge for Women, 1001 S. Edmonds Lane, Suite 900, Lewisville, Texas, 75067.
