Obituary of Monica Sherman
Please share a memory of Monica to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Monica Lee (Edinger) Sherman, 65, passed away peacefully with her family at her bedside on February 16, 2025. A beloved wife, mother, "Mimi," and friend who will be missed by all that knew her.
Monica was born in Cortland, NY on December 29, 1959 the daughter of Stanley and M. Catherine(Kate) Edinger. She attended Tully High School graduating in 1978. Following high school, Monica attended Oneonta State University, receiving her B.S in Home Economics. Following college, Monica worked at Pall Trinity in Cortland, and then was employed by Onondaga-Cortland-Madison BOCES in Fairmount, where she met Charlie. She left there to attend SUNY Cortland, where she earned her teaching certificate in Early Childhood Education. She then started her 30-year career at JM Murry Center, where she helped countless people with disabilities, advocated for their rights, and made an impact on so many lives. Upon retirement, she continued to show her caring ways by attending to the needs of several family members with medical conditions, which in of itself was a full-time job that she eagerly took on.
Monica married her perfect match, Charlie, on June 4, 1988. They had two children, Erika (Curtis) Withers of Cortland and Patrick Sherman of Cortland. She was a loving "Mimi" to her grandchildren, Lucas and Madelyn Withers, who were her favorites and she loved spending time with. She is a loving sister to John Edinger and an amazing aunt to her niece Samantha Edinger. Monica had many enjoyments in her life besides spending time with her family and friends. She was an avid quilter and loved going on quilt retreats with her many quilting friends. Monica loved to travel to and spend time at the beach, and she enjoyed going to Syracuse University athletic events. She also loved to go shopping, do "on a whim" wine tours with Charlie, and spend time on her back deck, reading and keeping in contact with people on social media.
Monica has many cousins and family members that loved her, and she would talk to regularly. She also had many friend groups, including the "hood" group, several quilting groups, her "work" girls, and friends from her school days. Monica's family would like to thank everyone for their support during the past few weeks.
Calling hours will be held Wednesday, February 19th from 5:00-7:00 PM at Wright-Beard Funeral Home in Cortland. There will be Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, February 20th at 11:00am at St. Mary's Church, North Main Street, in Cortland.
In lieu of flowers, and in honor of her love for quilting, her family asks for donations be sent to Thumbstall Quilt Guild PO Box 27, Marcellus NY 13108, to be used to create Kid's Comfort Quilts, which are quilts for children who have parents serving in the military, a cause that was very close to Monica's heart.
