Walter J Kasperek, 81, of Cortland, NY, passed away on April 2, 2025. Walter was born in Blasdell, NY to Walter and Phyllis Skrabacz Kasperek on February 2, 1944. He went to high school at Frontier Central High School in Hamburg, NY and graduated in 1961. He went on to earn a bachelor's degree in teaching from SUNY Fredonia in 1965. After discovering that teaching was not his passion, Walter proudly served in the United States Navy from 1966-1969. Continuing his education, he earned his associates degree in ophthalmic dispensing from Erie Community College and became a licensed optician. Walter settled in Cortland where he met his wife, Barbara, and together they raised their family.
As the owner of Eyewear Plus until his retirement in 2016, Walter provided countless families and members of the community with their eyewear needs. In his free time, he enjoyed hiking, canoeing, and golfing. After his retirement, he gave back to the community by serving on the Cortlandville town board and regularly volunteering at the CNY Living History Center.
Walter is survived by his children, Daniel (Kate) Kasperek and Ellen (Mark Dahlen) Kasperek, grandchildren, Owen and Everett Kasperek, sister, Evelyn (Edmund) Napieralski, and several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Barbara V Kasperek, sister, Phyllis Haines, and parents, Walter and Phyllis Kasperek.
Visitation will be held at Wright-Beard Funeral Home, 9 Lincoln Ave, Cortland, NY on Friday, April 25 at 5-7pm. Funeral service will be held at St. Margaret's Catholic Church in Homer, NY on Saturday, April 26 at 10:30am.
