Obituary of Sandra Cowan

Cortland – Sandra (Porter) Cowan – a beloved mother, grandmother, and cherished member of the Cortland community – passed away peacefully on June 25, 2025, at the age of 82. Born on January 8, 1943, Sandra grew up on Long Island, NY. She later attended Syracuse University, where she was a proud member of the Alpha Xi Delta sorority and where she met her future husband, Jeff Cowan. After graduating with a BA, she moved to Japan for two years to teach English and immerse herself in Japanese language and culture. It was an experience she cherished and never forgot. Upon her return, she and Jeff married in 1970. She obtained her Masters from SUNY Cortland and taught in Lafayette, NY. After Sandra and Jeff welcomed their son, Sandra dedicated many years to education as a substitute teacher. An accomplished and passionate individual, Sandra was a beautiful watercolorist, whose art won many local awards. She was also a joyful dancer. While she initially choreographed and performed modern dance, she later discovered her passion for Balkan folk dance, travelling regionally and internationally to pursue this hobby. Sandra was deeply committed to her faith and was a long-time member of the congregation at United Presbyterian Church, where her kindness and gentle spirit shone brightly. She had a remarkable ability to light up any room with her radiant smile and warm presence, leaving a lasting impression on all who met her. Sandra was predeceased by her husband, Jeff, and her parents, Herbert and Helen Porter. She is survived by her loving son, Peter, and daughter-in-law, Lisa, and her beloved granddaughters, Cora and Margot, who brought immense joy to her life. A service to celebrate Sandra's life will be held on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, at 11:00 AM at United Presbyterian Church, 14 Church St, Cortland, NY. Calling hours will be from 10:00AM.
