Obituary of John R. Sanford

John R. Sanford November 11, 1973 – July 7, 2025 CORTLAND – John R. Sanford, 51, of Cortland, NY, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, July 7, 2025, as the result of a tragic motor vehicle accident on NYS Route 90. Born on November 11, 1973, John was a proud and lifelong resident of Cortland County. He was best known as the owner and operator of JS Handyman Services, where he provided reliable and skilled services to his community for many years. John was also a former volunteer firefighter, having served his neighbors with dedication and heart. Additionally, he was a member of the Northern Tioga ATV Riders Club. John had a larger-than-life personality and a deep love for the simple joys in life. He was an avid motorcyclist, a devoted dog lover, and had a strong passion for building and working with his hands. Whether riding his motorcycle on a sunny day or tinkering with his equipment, he found peace in motion and creation. His loyal dog, Thunder, was never far from his side. John is survived by his loving daughters, Erica Howser, and her children Hailey, Aubrey, and Brailey; and Brittany (Alexander) Frisbie, and their children Carson and Kenzie. He is also survived by his siblings: Barbara Blanchard, Roger (Dawn) Burgdoff, Donna Townsend, Rhonda (Jay) Blake, David (Becky) Sanford, Linda Sanford, Cindy (Scott) Young, several nieces and nephews, and his faithful companion, Thunder. He was predeceased by his parents, Beatrice (Don Ellis) and Frank Sanford, his brother Ralph Sanford, his grandmother Thelma (Seth) Powers, and his cherished dog Rosco. Calling hours will be held on Thursday, July 17, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM with services to begin at 6PM at Wright-Beard Funeral Home, Cortland, NY.
