Obituary of Warren Eddy
Please share a memory of Warren to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
On July 3 rd , 2025, Warren Sutherland Eddy passed suddenly in his home. Born in Niagara Falls March 9, 1937, he was the son of Gordon Eddy and Norma Marsh Eddy.
He attended Niagara Falls High School, received his bachelor's from Rochester University and master's from Syracuse University. He was an avid SU basketball fan, but it did not compare to his love for the St. Louis Cardinals.
Warren retired from the Cortland Free Library in 2003 after 40 years of service. Over the decades he established the art gallery and added a mezzanine with architect Karl Wendt. He welcomed the community to sit and read one of the available periodicals, work on homework or share a book in the children's room, as long as you followed the rule to be quiet in the library and maintain a peaceful environment that allows others to read, study, and learn without distractions. He usually could be found behind the front desk perhaps checking for overdue books in the card catalog!
Memorial Day 2025 at the ceremony in Court House Park, Warren read the names of veterans who had died this past year. It was a long-standing tradition of which he was honored to be a part. A nod to his Great Grandfather Marsh who served in the Civil War and survived the battle of Antietam.
Warren loved his 1940 LaSalle and often would take it out for a quick summer drive if it was not waiting for some original part to be installed.
He is survived by his daughter Dyan Mahaffey and her husband Roger, grandson Kyle Mahaffey, sister-in-law Carol Eddy and sons Rick Madore and Robert Madore as well as much loved Marsh and Eddy first cousins.
He was predeceased by his parents and his brother Robert Norman Eddy.
He loved and respected his family and all human beings in general, driving his service to community and historical preservation. His accomplishments included but were not limited to: Chairman of Cortland Housing Authority Board of Directors, Rotarian, 1890's House Renovation Committee, Seven Valley USBC (bowling) VP, Secretary and 2023 Hall of Fame Member.
There will be a Celebration of Life 11:00 am Tuesday, August 5th at Grace and Holy Spirit, 13 Court Street, Cortland, NY. Followed by a gathering in fellowship held downstairs including appetizers, sandwiches and drinks. All are welcome. He was lovingly laid to rest in the Cortland Rural Cemetery July 17th.
