Obituary of Doris Slaugh

Doris Yost Slaugh was born in Coatesville, PA to the late C.A. Yost and Marian (Wilson) Yost. She graduated from McCaskey High School in Lancaster and then Mansfield State College in Mansfield, PA with a teaching degree in Home Economics. She taught Home Economics at Lancaster High School where she met her future husband, Robert D. Slaugh. They were married in 1950 and moved to Cortland, NY a few years later. She and her husband had two children, Andrew C. Slaugh and Rachel A. Slaugh (Christopher Shaffer). She has two granddaughters, Tricia Little Cappelli and Leah Shaffer and one great-granddaughter, Alice Cappelli.
In Cortland, she was a co-founder of Holy Spirit Lutheran Church (later Grace and Holy Spirit Church) where she sang in the choir and was involved in many church activities. In the community, she sang in the Choral Union and was active in Faculty Wives, was on the Board at the Brewster House, volunteered at the Cortland Free Library, YWCA, Church Women United and was a member of the FortNightly club. Her favorite activities included reading, classical music, sewing, gardening and birdwatching.
She is preceded by her parents and brother, Wilson Yost. She is survived by her son, Andrew, her daughter, Rachel, her granddaughters Tricia and Leah, great-granddaughter Alice and numerous nieces and nephews. She will be deeply missed by those that knew her.
The family will begin to receive guests at 2pm on Friday at the Wright-Beard Funeral Home, Inc, with a time of reflection and sharing to begin at 2:30. Once concluded, the family will receive guests again until 4pm.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Cortland Free Library.
