Obituary of Robert J. Phelps

Robert J. Phelps, 67, of Cortland passed away October 29, 2025 at home with family by his side. He was born March 22, 1958, in Cortland NY where he was raised and educated. Rob was a member of the PGA for over 20 years, participating in numerous local CNY PGA, state, national tournaments and previously named CNY PGA Assistant Player of the Year. One of his greatest career highlights was qualifying for 3 National PGA tournaments in one season. The other highlight was holding the "unofficial" course record of 60 at Elm Tree Golf Course. He was an avid bowler with a few 300 games and several 800 series to his credit. Rob was inducted into the local USBC Hall of Fame in 2007. He enjoyed skiing and fishing in his spare time. While Rob won many golf tournaments and bowling titles, his greatest source of pride was his family. He is survived by his wife of 42 years Machell Phelps, his son Robbie (Jenn) Phelps, his daughter Jenna (Brian) Kronenwetter, his granddaughters Sadie Kronenwetter and Vanessa Phelps, his mother Ruth Phelps, his siblings John Phelps, Timothy (Tonya Upholz) Phelps, Robin Phelps Canale, his Uncle Al Stauber, several nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, and numerous friends, including his best canine friend Beasley. Rob was predeceased by his father Robert W. Phelps and his brother Thomas Phelps. The Phelps family would like to recognize the outstanding staff at the Renzi Cancer Center for their care and support.
