Please share a memory of David to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
With our hearts full of gratitude for a life well lived, we celebrate the life of David John Yaman, who passed away peacefully surrounded by family on December 12, 2025, at the age of 80. David was born on April 25, 1945, in Cortland, New York, the son of James and Jeanne Yaman.
A cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother, mentor, community leader, and friend, David leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and lasting memories. He is survived by his loving wife. Susan Yaman, his children James Yaman (Valentina), Emily Yaman (Jamey Crumb), Molly Cohen (Ori), Michael Stevens (Linsey), Caitlin Stevens (Stephen Park), and Alex Stevens, and his greatest gifts, his grandchildren, Max, Lyla, Ellie, Mateo, Theo, Maya, Gael, and Eden along with his brothers Paul Yaman (Jackie), and Dan Yaman (Debbie). He is also remembered fondly by the many friends and members of the Cortland community whose lives were enriched by his kindness, generosity, and vibrant spirit. Dave brought joy, kindness, creativity, and generosity to everyone fortunate enough to know him.
David used his visionary gifts to help shape Cortland's industrial and residential landscape, contributing thoughtfully to the community he loved. He was particularly proud of his role as a founding member of both the Center for the Arts and the Cortland Repertory Theater, cornerstone organizations that reflect his deep commitment to the performing arts culture and community connection. He was also a restaurateur, known for the well-loved establishment, the Rusty Nail. A mentor to many, Dave was a true example of a gentleman who lived with the highest level of integrity. He embraced life with curiosity and adventure. He loved hang gliding, hiking, sailing, and photography, pursuits that reflected his energy and appreciation for the beauty of life.
A mass will be held at St. Mary's Church in Cortland on Friday, December 19th at 10:30am, followed by a celebration of life at the Center for the Arts in Homer. Family and friends are invited to join us in celebrating and honoring the life of David.
Contributions in David's name may go to the Center for the Arts, the Cortland Repertory Theater, or Renzi Cancer Center at Guthrie Cortland, honoring David's enduring passion for the arts and his community.
