If it was one thing my mother could be described as, it would be stubborn. “Particular”, as she would call it. She particularly loved antiques, Willie Nelson, her mini Pomeranian named Arthur, and that one Christmas song about the little boy buying shoes.
One thing she never budged on was grandchildren. I remember since a young age, my mom was always asking me for a grand baby. She stood next to me through three pregnancy losses, and being diagnosed with infertility. She still never left me alone about having a baby for her to spoil. For over five years, she kept a box full of the baby items we bought for my first pregnancy.
When I had my son, she looked ten years younger every time she saw him. Weekly, she would send gifs and pictures that said just how much she loved her grand baby; her Honey Bunch.
My mom passed two days before his first birthday. It brings me incredible peace that she finally got her ultimate goal of having one more baby to hold, and to rock in her arms. I am absolutely honoured to have been given the absolute privilege to see my mother watch me become a mom. Her pride in me will live on through my son.
Her last gift to him was an indoor slide and swing, all because i joked that he liked climbing on everything. That’s how she was. My mom was thoughtful, and always going the extra mile. She always volunteered when she could whether it be a school trip, or to running a fully operational clothing drive for a church. She gave even when she had nothing to give. When she loved, she loved with everything inside of her soul, and she loved just about everyone.
She spoke of going home to heaven; to see her parents, to all of her siblings, and to her nieces. While we mourn the amazing life Diane lived, may we remain constant to her newfound peace and joy as she watched from above.
