Dorothy Ann Madore August 7, 1935 – January 4, 2026 - SYRACUSE, NY — Dorothy Ann Madore, 90, passed away peacefully on January 4, 2026, at Upstate Medical Center following a short illness. She was comforted in her final hours by the presence of her grandchildren Brice, Ryan and Katie Madore. Born on August 7, 1935, in De Ruyter, New York, Dorothy was the daughter of the late Eugene W. Preston and Pauline S. (Andrews) Preston. A woman of compassion and lifelong ambition, she graduated from nursing school at Morrisville Community College in 1956, beginning a distinguished 40-year career in nursing. Dorothy dedicated herself to caring for the elderly at Van Duyn, Loretto, and James Square nursing homes before ultimately retiring from Community General Hospital in 1996 Dorothy was the beloved wife of Richard A. Madore, with whom she shared a remarkable, lifelong love story. High school sweethearts, they were together from the eighth grade. They celebrated Their 59 last wedding anniversary together on May 18th 2015. Richard's passing away, after a short illness, shortly after that anniversary. Dorothy never remarried . She was known for her immaculate housekeeping and loved to spend time cooking for her loved ones, always eager to try new recipes. A woman of creative talent, she enjoyed making beautiful floral centerpieces that brightened her home which she loved to decorate all year long. In her quieter moments, Dorothy could often be found lost in a good book or focused on completing a puzzle. Dorothy was predeceased by her parents, Eugene and Pauline Preston; her sister, Edith Preston Calhoun; and her husband, Richard A. Madore. She is survived by her brother, Eugene W. Preston Jr. of Apache Junction, AZ; and by her only son, Terry D. Madore, and his wife, Cindy Cappa-Madore, of Syracuse, NY. She has three grandchildren Katie Marie Madore, Brice A. Madore, and Ryan D. Madore, of Syracuse NY and two step-grandchildren Elisa M. Thiele of Knoxville TN and Nicole E. Jimenez of Tampa FL. and has seven great-grandchildren total. She is also survived by her four nieces, Kathleen Clark, Carolyn Dougherty, Julie Crandall, and Amy Marks; and her nephew, Calvin Calhoun. of Central NY. Dorothy will be remembered for her steadfast nature, her deep devotion to her family, and the strong, unwavering manor of care, she provided to her community for decades. Calling hours will Friday, 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Wright-Beard Funeral Home, Inc., 9 Lincoln Ave., Cortland, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, 10:30 AM at St. Mary's Church 46 N.
