It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Jay Franklyn Northup Jr., 84, of Virgil, NY, who went home to be with his Savior on April 18, 2026. A funeral service will be held at Wright Beard Funeral Home, 9 Lincoln Ave Cortland, NY 13045, on Thursday, April 23, 2026 at noon. Friends are invited to call from 11 o'clock to noon, prior to the service. Interment shall be in Virgil Cemetery immediately following the funeral.
Jay is survived by his daughters Karen Northup (Candor NY ) and Joan Northup Jorden (Allentown PA) and daughter-in-law Laurie (Jay F. III) Northup (Mount Pleasant NC), sisters Nancy (Paul) Root, Cynthia Joan, and Sister-in-Law, Tena (Kevin) Northup, nine grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Gretta D Northup, parents Jay and Marjarie Northup, sons Jay Franklyn Northup lll and Scott McClellan Northup, brothers John Milton, Kihm Franklyn, Keith Lawrence, Kevin Wayne (Tena), Hugh Leslie, and Douglas Craig, as well as sisters Carol Anne Carpenter and Sandra Marie (Ted) Harris.
Jay was born in Cortland, NY to Jay F. Northup Sr. and Marjarie B. Northup on June 4, 1941. He attended Cortland High School , went on to become a Journeyman Painter, and a life-long member of the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades.
He was an active member of Parkside Assembly of God where he was involved in hospitality, church government, and leading the Royal Rangers boys scouting group. In addition, he also raised honey bees, award winning show chickens, and homing pigeons.
