Obituary of Howard Van Young

Howard Young was born on April 11, 1954, in Brooklyn, New York, to Minnie and Maxie Young. He was the fourth of their children and grew up surrounded by family, music, and the vibrant culture of Brooklyn. Howard attended Eastern District High School, where his lifelong love of music began to flourish. A gifted self-taught musician, he learned to play both the drums and keyboards, honing his talents through dedication and passion. By the early 1970s, he was already performing in local clubs and soon earned an opportunity that would shape much of his musical career: joining the acclaimed R&B, Funk, and Disco group Crown Heights Affair as a keyboardist. With Crown Heights Affair, Howard contributed to studio recordings and toured extensively throughout the United States and abroad. He performed before audiences large and small, helping bring the group's energetic sound to life. Among his proud musical moments was appearing on the legendary television program American Bandstand hosted by Dick Clark. In the early 1980s, Howard joined another musical group, The Strikers, where he contributed to and performed on several popular recordings, including the popular dance song "Body Music." Music remained at the center of Howard's life. He was an avid listener who appreciated every detail of a song, from the vocals to the arrangement. He continued writing, composing, and arranging music throughout his life, collaborating with former bandmates and fellow musicians while also pursuing projects of his own. Beyond music, Howard was a man of many talents and interests. He had a deep passion for photography and videography and was rarely without a camera, always ready to capture special moments and everyday beauty. He also loved cooking and took great pride in experimenting with flavors and cuisines. Whether crafting a unique pizza, preparing a delicious pasta dish, or perfecting his tandoori chicken, Howard found joy in sharing good food with those around him. In his later years, Howard made his home in Cortland, New York, where he shared companionship and friendship with Patricia Bryant. Together they spent many meaningful years focused on music, health, and enjoying life's simple pleasures. Howard's favorite outings often included dining at Dosa Grill in Syracuse and searching for hidden treasures at the Thrifty Shopper. On June 11, 2026, Howard peacefully passed away after courageously battling a series of health challenges. Though his journey on earth has ended, the music he created, the memories he captured, and the love he shared remain as lasting reminders of a life well lived. Howard is survived by his beloved partner, Patricia Bryant; his sister, Veronica Young; his daughters, Destiny Burns and Selena Williams; his cherished grandchildren, Aself, Jacob, Crystal, Ari, Angel, Elzuron, and Ezran; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, friends, fellow musicians, and loved ones who will forever treasure his memory. Howard was predeceased by his parents, Minnie and Maxie Young Jr.; and his siblings, Maxie Young III, Larry Young, Ronald Young, Felicia Young, Jerome Young, and Lateef Young. Howard will be remembered for his creativity, musical gifts, adventurous spirit, big personality, and unwavering dedication to the people and passions he loved.
