Steve loved to take on new projects.

Steve and Jamie were neighbors for a while, some of my best neighbors. What a delightful couple and later , a family. I am so sorry that his life was cut short, yet not before the boys had him for a while as well as Jamie. My prayers are with you all and I am sure he has a high place where he has gone.
Fondly, Susan Fitts

Steve was a heart-y guy -- meaning he had a lot of heart -- and showed that in his dedication to what he believed in and cherished. A tiny example: for years Steve was a stalwart in helping organize and carry out the all-night breakfast put on for studying students approaching finals week. (I lasted one year.)
My heartfelt condolences for your loss, Jamie, Luke, Adam, and family.
Maya Angelou's poem "When Great Trees Fall" reads in part:
When great trees fall, rocks on distant hills shudder,
lions hunker down in tall grasses,
and even elephants lumber to safety.
When great trees fall in forests,
small things recoil into silence,
their senses eroded beyond fear.
...
And when great souls die, after a period peace blooms, slowly and always irregularly. Spaces fill
with a kind of soothing electric vibration.
Our senses, restored, never to be the same, whisper to us.
They existed. They existed. We can be.
Be and be better. For they existed.

My most deepest condolences Jamie and family. Steve was such a dear friend of Mike and of our family. I will never forget how he helped our little family get through our own difficult times. I am so heartbroken to hear this. What a genuinely kind and good man Steve was. May God rest his soul.

As a former colleague in the NYS University Police Chief's Association, I hold the greatest respect for Steve. Somehow, Steve was quickly someone you knew you could trust.
His welcoming and approachable personality accompanied measured wisdom and a sharp wit. Steve was always affable, practical, and willing to help others.
Beyond SUNY connections/contact, I was once was at a national conference in Reno with Steve. We decided to rent a car and drive around the perimeter of Lake Tahoe - both mesmerized by the beauty of that lake. On that fun drive, he talked about his family in a way that you could tell that he coveted them and held them dearly in his heart. I am sure they know this too.
I'm sorry that I won't have a chance to cross paths again, but will not forget Steve. I will remember him with great respect, with fondness, and with an image of that patented smile of his.
