Obituary of Joseph F. Ferger

Joseph Francis Ferger, 79, passed away on July 11, 2026 at Hospicare in Ithaca, NY.

Born on March 18, 1947, in Flushing, NY to Francis and Leona (née Wierzbowski) Ferger, he was a 1964 graduate of Locust Valley High School in Locust Valley, NY. He then attended St. Edward's University in Austin, TX for his bachelor's degree, and earned his master's degree at Hofstra University in Hempstead, NY. Before retirement, he was a special education teacher, a job that brought him great joy and satisfaction.

Joseph was a sports fan who enjoyed men's and women's college basketball and college football. He was a devoted fan of the NY Jets. Over the past two decades, nothing brought him greater joy than watching his grandchildren participate in their many activities. He also enjoyed breakfast at local diners and watching documentaries.

He was the father of Tara (Tom Cranfield), Corrine (Thomas Decker), and Marisa (Paul Markowski), and while their relationships were often difficult and imperfect, they were an important part of his life.

His grandchildren, Nolan, Gabby, Genevieve, Tyler, Amelia, Shane, and Charlotte were the light of his life. They knew him as a caring and attentive "Poppa" who took an active interest in their lives.

He is also survived by siblings Francis Ferger (the late Kathy), Kenneth Ferger (Tena), and Karen Hafner (George). Joseph is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his former wife Elaine, and brothers John and Dennis.

His family would like to thank all the healthcare professionals who cared for him over the past few years, especially the kind and patient hospice team who were there at the very end.

Visitation will be held Saturday, July 18, 1:30-2:30 pm with a service following at 2:30 pm at Wright-Beard Funeral Home, 9 Lincoln Ave, Cortland, NY.. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospicare, 172 East King Road, Ithaca, NY 14850.
