Obituary of Lance Daniel Sherman

Lance Daniel Sherman of Cortland, New York, passed away peacefully on August 9, 2026, at the age of 55. Born on May 10, 1971, to David and Michelle Sherman, Lance lived a life centered on family, friendship, and kindness.

Above all else, Lance was a devoted family man. He was married to his best friend and life partner, Helen Sherman, for more than 32 years. Together they built a loving family and raised three children: Chontina Sherman, Marissa Sherman, and Brett Sherman. Lance's greatest pride and joy was his first grandchild, Aaliyah Sherman. He was also a loving grandfather to Daniele and Addison, all of whom brought immeasurable happiness to his life.

Lance found joy in life's simple pleasures. He loved fishing, spending time outdoors, riding his bicycle, and building and painting model race cars, often creating intricate backstories for each driver. He treasured every moment spent with family and friends and especially loved playing dolls and The Sims with his granddaughter Aaliyah, making memories that will be cherished forever.

For more than ten years, Lance worked at SUNY Cortland, where he formed many lasting friendships, including a special bond with one of his closest friends, Steve West. During his time there, he was frequently called upon to serve as the college mascot, bringing energy and enthusiasm to the role. He also spent a memorable summer at Raquette Lake, an experience he often spoke about with great fondness.

Lance later joined the Cortland City School District, where he worked for the past five years serving students, staff, and families at the district's elementary schools and high school. As the alma mater of many of his family members and friends, the school held a special place in his heart. He enjoyed supporting the school's athletic programs, especially girls' basketball and football, helping prepare for events, being the Purple Tiger mascot vibrantly, and creating a welcoming environment for everyone who walked through the doors.

Lance is survived by his loving wife, Helen Sherman; his children, Chontina Sherman, Marissa Sherman her fiancé Tyler, and Brett Sherman; his grandchildren, Aaliyah, Daniele, and Addison; his mother, Michelle, and stepfather, George; his brothers, Scott Sherman and his wife, Trish, and Troy Sherman; his brother-in-law, John Boyce,and his wife, Sean; brother in law Ted Hoghtalen Jr and his wife Sam, brther in law Martin houghtalen, as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins, and many dear friends.

He was predeceased by his father, Dave; his sister, Sherry; and his nephew, Nick, and father in law Ted Houghtaen Sr.. While his absence leaves an immeasurable void, those who loved him find comfort in knowing he has been reunited with them.

A calling hour service will be held on Friday at Wright-Beard Funeral Home from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Lance will be remembered for his unwavering love for his family, his generous spirit, his sense of humor, and his ability to make everyone feel welcomed and valued. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
