Some of the most formative years of my adolescence and early adulthood were spent working alongside Jeff and his father, Bob Grummons. I started working for Bob at twelve, taking care of his estate and mowing his college apartment properties. At fourteen, I went to my school guidance counselor, got my working papers, and Bob hired me onto his construction crew with Jeff. I continued the caretaker work while spending summers, school vacations, and breaks learning construction and masonry beside Bob and Jeff.
They trusted me with real responsibility. Jeff was the first person to put a jackhammer in my hands and teach me how to use it at fourteen. When I turned sixteen and my dad wasn't going to let me get my driver's license, Bob sat down with him and explained that I needed it because he needed me to drive his construction trucks. I wasn't just a kid hanging around anymore. I had earned a place on their crew.
Jeff and I worked together for years—sidewalks throughout Cortland, foundations, patios, block, brick and stone work, countless concrete pours, and commercial jobs at Smith-Corona, Rubbermaid, and Monarch. In 1986, we worked on the fountain in Cortland's Courthouse Park, part of a redesign that required us to move the Civil War monument to make room for the new fountain. We also set a time capsule there, with Bob and Jeff putting things inside before it was sealed. All these years later, the fountain still stands. There's something meaningful about knowing that our work—and a small piece of Bob and Jeff's lives—remains there in the heart of Cortland.
But some of my fondest memories of Jeff came from building the Grummons family camp at Cross Lake. When we arrived, a small one-story camp stood on the property. Bobby Atkins brought in his backhoe, crushed the old structure, helped clear and prepare the site, and dug for the footers. Then our crew went to work. We poured the footers, set the anchors, raised the frame, and enclosed a beautiful Barden Homes chalet-style camp that reminded me of the condos at Greek Peak. It was magnificent, beautifully situated, and extremely well built.
After that first week, the crew moved on to other jobs, but Bob sent Jeff and me back for another two weeks to finish odds and ends and oversee the interior contractors. Those daily rides to and from Cross Lake gave Jeff and me hours together. We talked about work, life, and everything in between. Jeff had known me since I was a kid, but he didn't treat me like one. He treated me as a coworker and a younger equal. That meant more to me than he probably ever knew.
After we finished the camp, Jeff invited me back many times—boating, swimming out to the dock, volleyball, picnics, and good times with family and friends. He even showed me where he kept an extra key and told me I could stop in if I was ever in the area. Over the years, I occasionally did, sitting on that dock with a cold Bud and enjoying a place our own hands had helped build.
Looking back, Bob and Jeff didn't just teach me how to build things. They helped build me. Jeff gave a young man his respect, his friendship, his knowledge, and countless memories I still carry decades later.
My deepest condolences and best wishes to Brittiny, Brian, their children, and the entire extended Grummons family. I will always be grateful for the years I spent working beside Jeff and Bob.
Jeff will be remembered very fondly. Rest easy, old friend.

Jeffrey was one of a kind, one of the friendliest people, a real character and a kind and caring person. I was so happy when he married Kathy; they were finally HAPPY and perfect for one another. I am thinking of you Kathy, his best and caring wife. No one I know ever cared about Jeff more than you.

Recieved a heartbreaking message today that Jeff had passed. Jeff was a great guy and was always there when you needed him. I remember when the Stone trial for grange fire was taking place, and Jeff was outside the courthouse offering his condolences to our family, that ment a lot to us. Thanks for being you and for all the good times at Cortlanes..Our second home back in the day Lol! Jeff you will be missed. God Bless You My Friend.
