Maxine Butler, 78, of Cortland NY, passed away July 21, 2016 at home surrounded by her family. She was born July 4, 1938 in Binghamton NY, the daughter of the late Theodore and Thelma Bailey Hoyte. Maxine held many jobs throughout her life. Her greatest love and satisfaction was her 29 ½ years as a school crossing guard. She was a highly dedicated employee, with the majority of her service at the Smith School post, until her illness caused her to take retirement. She was associated with the McGraw United Methodist Church, and enjoyed involvement with many outreach projects like the annual flower sale on Mother's Day weekend, prayer bears and "Share the Love" blankets for cancer patients. She was dedicated to her family and friends. With her late husband, they raised six children. She is survived by Paul (Patti) Walts of Cortland NY, Dianna (Guy) Caputo of Toledo OH, Robert Butler of Endwell NY, Cathy Caputo of McGraw NY, and Michele (Jeff) Wujcik of LeRoy NY, 16 grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Lonnie of 46 yrs., and her son Richard. And also left to cherish her memory are many friends including Jon and Gerry Ahrens, Gary Howe and Lori Burns and constant companions Bambi, Macey, and Mia. Friends may pay their respects at Wright-Beard Funeral Home, 9 Lincoln Ave., Cortland NY, with visitation Tuesday July 26, from 4-7 pm, and Wednesday 2-3 pm. Funeral services begin Wednesday 3 pm at the funeral home. Interment will follow at the Cortland Rural Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations in Maxine's name to the McGraw United Methodist Church Outreach Committee, Cancer Resource Center of Ithaca, or Hospicare and Palliative Care Services.
