Obituary of Calvert Fitts

Calvert A. Fitts, 76 of Cortland, NY passed away on August 3rd, 2023 at Gutherie Cortland Medical Center. He was born on January 2nd, 1947 in Cortland, first born child of Morris and Iona Fitts. Calvert was a loving father, brother, grandfather and friend. Calvert graduated from Manlius Military Academy, Chapel Hill University for his Bachelor's Degree, and Albany Law School for his Law Degree. Calvert worked as a state attorney in Albany before returning home to start Fitts and Fitts Attorney's Law Firm, alongside his father Morris Fitts. For over 40 years Calvert ran his practice as well as working through family court, protecting the rights of children as a law guardian and attorney for the child. Calvert's true passion was a campfire by the water and maybe a bite or two on his fishing line. He loved the St. Lawrence River as a child and was always fond of returning to it. The next best thing to campfire for Calvert was playing cards with his friends at the Cortland Elks Lodge. Calvert was a member of the Elks for over 50 years and volunteered for various youth sponsorship programs and charities. Calvert is survived by his son Jeffrey (Vanessa) Fitts and daughter Tricia Fitts, brother George (Sandy) Fitts; his sister Kristina (Robert) Hoppe; his nieces and nephews Zachary, Charlotte, Emma Hoppe and Matthew Calvert Parker; great niece Avery Parker and his grandchildren Eliana and Jonathan Fitts. In addition to his parents Calvert is predeceased by his twin sister Caddie Fitts Parker and his grandson Mitchell Fitts. Calling hours will take place on Thursday, August 10th, from 4pm to 7pm at Wright-Beard Funeral Home, and funeral services will be Friday, August 11th at 10am at the Funeral Home.
