Alexander B. Cuthbert, 80, of Floral Ave., Cortland NY, passed away September 8, 2009 at his daughter Phyllis home with family by his side. He was born May 30, 1929 in Staten Island NY, the son of the late William & Catherine Doty Cuthbert. Mr. Cuthbert was raised and educated in Staten Island. Following high school he served with the US Army during the Korean War and was honorably discharged. While living in Staten Island, he worked for Atlantic and Pacific Tea Co. for 42 yrs. retiring in 1995. Shortly thereafter, he and his wife relocated to Cortland to be closer to family. He was a member of the Homer Ave. United Methodist Church of Cortland and the Cortland Sr. Center. In his spare time he enjoyed playing cards and visiting the casinos. His greatest enjoyment was spending time with family. He is survived by his wife of 52 yrs. Carol Cuthbert of Cortland NY, daughters Carol (Theresa) Valentine of Staten Island NY, Phyllis (John) Curtis of Homer NY, son Gregory (Amanda) Cuthbert of Cortland NY, grandchildren Valerie (Kevin) Chapman, Courtney Cuthbert, Connor Munn, Gregory Cuthbert Jr., Shaun Valentine, great grandchildren Espen Chapman, Jayden Chapman, Breanna Cuthbert, many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Alexander was predeceased by his siblings Robert, Paul, William Cuthbert, and Catherine Velten. Calling hours will be held Saturday 10-11:30 am at the Wright-Beard Funeral Home Inc. 9 Lincoln Ave., Cortland NY, 13045. A funeral service will follow 12 noon at the Homer Ave. United Methodist Church of Cortland with Rev. Stephen W. Sigourney presiding. Burial with military honors will follow in the Cortland Rural Cemetery. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Homer Ave. United Methodist Church or Veterans Hospital in Syracuse. You would always put everyone before yourself even a complete stranger. There are not many like you out there. you will be missed by all that have spent there life with you and ones you just passed in the street and had a brief talk with. You sure had a way with making friends. you were my best friend many times when i needed one and most of all the best dad a son could ask for. if i can be half the dad you were Gregg Jr. and Courtney will turn out great.
