George Oliver, 89, of Cortland passed away June 8, 2013 at Upstate Hospital in Syracuse. He was born August 11, 1923 in Harford Mills NY, the son of the late George and Mabel Danes Oliver. George was an army veteran of WWII achieving the rank of Corporal and was honorably discharged in 1945. He served with the 89th Infantry and landed upon Omaha Beach the day after D-Day. He was employed as a supervisor with Marathon Metal Products and Irving Airshoot. George then became proprietor of G & D Appliance in Marathon. George was also owner operator of the Brown Beaver in Willet during the 1970s. He then retired at the age of 57. His memberships included the Cortland Masons, Shriners, and American Legion. George is survived by his sons George Oliver, William Oliver, his daughters Faye Stewart, Gloria Ingraham, his step children Donna Smith, Penny, Robert, Dennis, and Danny Young, his brother Robert Oliver, many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. George was predeceased by his first wife Doris in1959 and second wife Sybil in 2004. Calling hours will be Wednesday 5-7 pm at the Wright-Beard Funeral Home Inc 9 Lincoln Ave., Cortland NY, 13045. A Masonic service will be held Wednesday at 6:45 pm to conclude calling hours. Funeral services will be held 1 pm Thursday at Wright-Beard Funeral Home. Burial will follow at the Marathon Cemetery.
