John D. Snell passed away at the Cortland Regional Medical Center on October 19, 2013. He was surrounded by family and friends. He was born in Adams County, Nebraska, on February 23, 1936 to Howard and Dollie Snell. John earned a BS from Kearney State College, an MS from the University of Nebraska, and a doctorate in Physical Education from Indiana University. He taught and coached in Nebraska and then spend more than thirty years at SUNY Cortland as a faculty member in the Physical Education Department. John was an avid golfer and, over the years belonged to several leagues. He enjoyed playing cards with his friends at the Elks Club and making trips to Turning Stone and Atlantic City. Surviving children and stepchildren include Steven Snell (Emily), Lebanon, IN; Matthew Snell (Bridget), Duxbury, MA; Cheyenne Cute (Jesse), Cortland; Shanen Cute, Ocean City, MD; and Kevin Snell, Lincoln NE, Grandchildren included Jeffrey, Rachel, Mary and Juliet Snell and Megan and Caleb Cute. He is also survived by one brother, Robert Snell (June), Wichita KS; and a sister, Ardith Talbot (Richard), Eldora, IA. His parents and a brother and a sister predeceased him. A memorial service will be held at a later date. A private burial service will be held with family members. Memorial gifts may be given to the American Cancer Society. Wright-Beard Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements
