Leon E. Oughterson, 98, of Cortland passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, April 3, 2013. Born in Dundee, NY on March 23, 1915.
He was an army veteran and a 40 year retail manager for the A&P Supermarket Company. He moved to Cortland in 1947 and managed the stores on Central Avenue, later Groton Ave., before retiring in 1974. He enjoyed 39 years of active retirement. He was an avid golfer, woodworker, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, a 65 plus year Mason and 60 year member of the American Legion. He medaled over 65 times in the Upstate Senior Games and was a member of Cortland Bowling Hall of Fame.
He was predeceased by his wife of 68 years, Thelma Murdock Oughterson (DOD 4-11-2008) who he will join in the family plot in Dundee, N.Y. He is survived by his three children; Daniel of Scottsdale, AZ; Diane (Murray) of Lakeville, Ma; and James of Washington Court House, Ohio; 6 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren, all of whom have a great example to follow because of him.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday April 6 at the United Presbyterian Church, 25 Church Street Cortland, at 11:00 AM.
