Richard H. Barnes, 85, of Cortland, passed away March 16, 2013 at University Hospital, Syracuse NY. He was born September 16, 1927 in McDonough NY, the son of the late Harold and Elma Sherman Barnes.
Richard graduated from Norwich High School in 1945. He immediately enlisted with U.S. Navy and was honorably discharged in 1946. Richard was a long time employee of the Public Loan Co. in Binghamton and the Cornell Credit Union. His memberships include the Syracuse Brigadier Drum and Bugle Corp., American Legion, and Elks Lodge. Richard also played semi pro football for the Norwich Y Giants in the early 1950s.
He is survived by his wife of 59 yrs. Marilyn Evans Barnes of Cortland, his sons Timothy Barnes of Marathon, Ronald (Penny) Barnes of Syracuse, Richard (Susan) Barnes Jr. of Cortland, grandchildren Kristina Potter, Timothy Jr., Brian, and Katie Barnes, great grandson Mason Potter, his brothers Harold (Doris) Barnes of Norwich, Donald (Anna Mae) Barnes of New Hampshire, his sister Margaret Murtagh of Texas, sister in law Marjorie Barnes of Michigan ,sister-in-law and brother-in-law Joan and John Tallet of Binghamton NY, nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by siblings Shirley Murtagh, Morris Barnes. and brother in law
William Murtagh.
At Richards request here are no services, but a celebration of his life will be held at a later time.
