Patrick Scarano, a lifelong resident of Cortland NY, died peacefully surrounded by his family on January 31, 2013 at Northern Dutchess Community Hospital in Rhinebeck, NY. He was 97. Patrick was born on April 14, 1915 in Cortland to Angelo Charles Scarano and Angelina Denatone, both from Trivento, Campobasso, Italy. Patricks passion in life was flying airplanes. He flew for Eastern Airlines in the early 40s until he joined the US Army Air Corps and served in the China-Burma-India theatre where he flew the hump in World War II. In 1945 he received the Air Forces Distinguished Flying Cross with clusters and the Air Medal with clusters for his service. After the war he served in the Air Force Reserves and retired in 1967 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Once a civilian pilot again, he flew commercially for J. Coyne Industries out of Syracuse. Patrick was a musician and played bass with local bands for weddings and parties throughout his life. He enjoyed an active retirement well into his nineties €“ gardening, travelling, sports, volunteering and spending time with loved ones. He was a communicant of St. Marys Church. He is predeceased by his wife Sylvia; daughter Patricia Maguire; son Charles; brother Floyd Scarano; and sisters Carmella Bush, Louise Thompson, and Marietta Cantwell. He is survived by his daughter Charlene Paden and her husband Peter of Craryville NY; granddaughters Jessica Seidel and husband Carter Hoodless of Jersey City NJ, Stephanie Seidel and husband Terence Bernardo of Brooklyn NY; great granddaughter Allegra Hoodless of Jersey City; sister Elvira DiIorio of Cortland; nieces Elizabeth "Betty" West and husband Frances "Dutch"West of Cortland, Rosemary Tavares of San Ramon CA, and Rosalie Bryant of Pulaski TN; nephews Charles Scarano and wife Peggy of Freemont CA, Raymond DiIorio of Cortland, and Jim DiIorio of Sylvan Beach NY; and very special friend Dorothy Walker of Rochester, NY. A memorial service will be held on Saturday June 29 at 10:30 AM at the Wright-Beard Funeral Home, 9 Lincoln Ave, Cortland . Interment with Military honors will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Cortland. A calling hour will be held 9:30-10:30 amprior to the service. Charlie was Ron's best friend in high school and he always remained very close to Pat. He was a great guy and we will miss him. Marilyn and Ron Charlene, I am so very sorry to hear about your father. Our very best wishes to you and your family. I was sorry to miss you at the class reunion, as I was very much looking forward to reuniting. The memories of both your Mom and Dad in that lovely home back in the old neighborhood are vivid. That house spruce-up the whole neighbor then, and still does. I was a friend of his son Charles and kept in touch with Sylvia and Patrick for a number of years,only losing touch with Patrick a few years ago.
