Obituary of Raymond Dean Olson

Dr. Raymond Dean Olson, 76, ofCortland, NY, passed away
unexpectedly December 20, 2012 at his home. He was born November 21, 1936 in
Grafton, North Dakota, the son of the late Archie and Frances Dunbar
Olson.
Dr. Olson was raised in Calvin, North Dakota, attending
local schools then completing his undergraduate studies at the
University of North Dakota receiving a B.A. and B.S. He completed his
doctorate in medicine at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.
He did his internship at Highland Hospital and Strong Memorial Hospital in
Rochester, N.Y., then served two years with the U.S. Air Force in Minot,
N.D., before completing his residency in OB-Gyn. In June of 1968, he
joined the late Dr.'s Theodore Jacobus and Lewis Berk at their practice on
Euclid Ave. in Cortland. In 2001, after 32 years of practice and delivering over 5000 babies, Dr. Olson retired from the group where his partner, Dr. In Whan Oh is still practicing. His professional memberships include the
Central New York OB-Gyn Association, Medical Society State of New York, American Medical Association, and American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). He alsoserved as past president of the local American Cancer Society board and was a
founding board member of the Golden Eagles Hockey Club.
He is survived by his loving, wife of 51 years, Carol Persia Olson of
Homer,his son Eric (Sara) Olson of Lakeland, FL.,his daughters Lynn (Michael) Olson (Horrigan) of Glastonbury,CT., and Lisa(Paul) Gugerty of Homer; tengrandchildren Alaina, Luke, and John Olson; Haley and Matthew Olson andLilly Horrigan; Grace, Tighe, Anna, and Jane Gugerty; his sister JeanArnold and his nephew Christopher Arnold both of Bayfield, CO. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Barbara Persia, nieces Julie Persia Fulkerson, Mary Persia Leach all from Rochester, N.Y, and nephew Stephen Persia of Ohio.
He is predeceased by his parents,his nephew, Daniel Arnold,and brother in law Stephen Persia. He loved being outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He also enjoyed spending time at his homes in Cape Cod and Florida. His biggest joy came from playing with his grandchildren and watching them grow. Poppa/Papa will be dearly missed by all of us.

Wright-Beard Funeral Home Inc., 9 Lincoln Ave., Cortland NY, 13045.
Burial will follow at the St. Marys Cemetery.

I will miss Ray even though in late years I have mainly talked with him when seeking to talk to Carol. He was a good guy with a sense of humor and very down to earth.
