Frederick Fred B. Smith, 80 of 807 Stupke Rd., Cortland, passed away July 16, 2010 at the Cortland Regional Medical Center. Mr. Smith was born March 13, 1930 in East Genoa, NY the son of the late Henrietta and Earl Swartwood and Fred N. Smith. Mr. Smith had been a long time resident of the Cortland area. Fred had served in the US Army 11 th Airborne Division. Throughout his life he had been employed at Champion Sheet Metal,Brockway Truck Co., Smith Corona and Garys Automotive. He had been a longtime member of the Moose Club and enjoyed bowling and hunting. He will be fondly remembered for his sense of humor and his loyalty to his family and friends. Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of 50 years Martha Torrey Smith, his daughters; Barbara (Anthony) Cincotta of Cortland and Nancy (Randy) Wheelock of Cortland. His beloved grandchildren Alyssa Lyon and Andrew Wheelock both of Cortland. One brother Ronald Swartwood of Auburn, NY. Several nieces and nephews. Fred was also predeceased by his brother Donald Swartwood. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 11:00 AM at the Wright-Beard Funeral Home, 9 Lincoln Ave, Cortland with the Rev. Michael Leary officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in the Cortland Rural Cemetery. Friends are invited to call on Tuesday evening 4:00-7:00 PM at the funeral home.
