Henry Herman Knabe, 76, of Cortland, N.Y., passed away September 3, 2010peaceably with his family beside him at St. joseph's Hospital. He was born June 11, 1934 in Flushing, N.Y., the son of Elizabeth and Henry H. Knabe.Henry operated, in partnership with his wife Lilliane, the 7 Valley Motel in Cortland. He graduated from Ursinus College, Pennsylvania,in 1956 with a BA in Business Administration. Served in the U.S. Army (1956-59) and the Army Reserves (1959-64). He was employed at Mercantile Co. in N.Y.C. and than Bickford Restaurant Corp. in Long Island City as their purchasing agent, and Auger Enterprises in Washington, D.C.In 1973, the Knabe family moved to Cortland from Huntington, Long Island. Hank worked at several Cortland car dealerships until 1992. He became involved with his wife's family business in 1992 till present.He was an avid reader, enjoyed gardening, looked forward each year attending the Cornell ice hockey games withhis son Peter, and golf outings with his family. Opa's greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren.Henry is survived by his wife, Lilliane Boehm Knabe; his daughter Karin Knabe-Richardson; sons; Peter Knabe of Cortland; Paul (Jodie Norwood) Knabe of Cortland, and grandchildren, Eric, Kooper and Kaylla; his sister Elizabeth Kiernan of Norristown, Pa.; as well as several niece's and nephew's.In lieu of flowers, kindly consider a donation to St. Paul Nursery School or St. Paul Lutheran Church, 49 Hamlin St., Cortland, N.Y. 13045.Calling hours will be held from 5-7 pm Friday at Wright-Beard Funeral Home, 9 Lincoln Ave, Cortland. Funeral services will be held at 11 am Saturday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Cortland. Interment will be at Cortland Rural Cemetery I send my condolence to the Knabe family- After 30 years away from Cortland I stayed at the 7 Valley Motel in Aug. 2009- Henry and his family welcomed me home and provided a wonderful place to stay while I was in Cortland, I am very sad to hear of his passing and all my prayers go out to the Knabe family.Peter Jon Wrieden We are all very sorry to hear about Hank.
