Sherman T. Kumpf, 92of Cortland passed away August 2, 2012 in Cortland Regional Medical Center.
Sherman was born January 8, 1920 in Bluffton, In. the son of the late Sherman Todd and Flossy Bowen Pace Kumpf. He graduated from P.A. Allen High school in 1939; He is survived by his wife of 65 years Barbara Buckner his two sons Scott (Carol) Kumpf of Ithaca, and Mike (Kathy) Kumpf of Cortland, six grandchildren: Amanda (Scott) Bonneau, Megan (Patrick) Duffy, Drew Kumpf, Sean (Christine) Kumpf, Kelly Kumpf and Steven Kumpf, 6 great grandchildren
Mr. Kumpf served 5 years with the US Army during World War II. He was in the 63rd Field Artillery and was awarded the Bronze Star of heroism.
He was assistant manager of J.C. Penny Store, Bluffton, IN. Mt Vernon, Ohio, Salem, Ohio, Sommerset, Pennsylvania, and Dewitt, NY. He was the manager of the J.C. Penny Store in Cortland, NY from 1960 until his retirement in 1980. He was with the Penney co. 40 years.
Mr. Kumpf is a 32 degree mason, Member of the Cortlandville Masonic Lodge #470, Cortland County Shrine Club and Lodge of Perfection AASR.
