Obituary of Francis J. Quinlan Sr.

Francis "Fran" J. Quinlan Sr., 93, of Cortland, passed away February 3, 2014 at the Groton Nursing Home. He was born February 7, 1920 in Homer NY, the son of the late Roger and Cecelia O'Connell Quinlan.
Fran was raised and educated in Homer, graduating from Homer High School in 1937. He then continued his education at Hudson Valley Community College receiving his degree in Police Science. He began his career at Marcy State Hospital, then at Central Islip Psychiatric Center on Long Island as Chief Safety Officer, and retiring from the New York State Office of Mental Health, Albany, in 1977 as Assistant Director of Safety Services. His memberships included being a communicant at St. Mary's Church, Knights of Columbus and American Legion. Fran enjoyed big game hunting and wintering in Florida with his late wife Anna.
Fran served in the U.S. Army Air Force from 1944 to 1946.
He is survived by three grandsons and four great grandchildren, all residing in Nevada. He was predeceased by his wife Anna (nee Duffy), his sons Roger and Francis "Jimmy" J. Quinlan, Jr., his brothers John, Roger, Richard, and Thomas Quinlan, his sister Elizabeth Kenney.
Calling hours will be Monday 5-7 pm at the Wright-Beard Funeral Home Inc., 9 Lincoln Ave., Cortland NY, 13045.
A prayer service will be held Tuesday 10:30 am at Wright-Beard Funeral Home with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated 11 am at St. Mary's Church, Cortland. Spring burial will be at the St. Patrick's Cemetery, Otisco, NY.
