Obituary of John Francis Ferguson
John F. "Fergie" Ferguson, 90, of Cortland passed away February 19, 2014 at the Cortland Park and Rehabilitation Nursing Home. He was born November 18, 1923 in Cortland the son of the late Archie and Helen Sheridan Ferguson. He served as his mother's care giver throughout her life after Archie's death.
Fergie was a lifelong resident of Cortland. After graduating from St. Mary's High School, he enlisted with the U.S. Navy during WWII, serving seven years, three months, and twenty two days. Fergie was a longtime plumber at Cornell University retiring in 1985. He was a communicant of St. Mary's Church, member of the VFW, DAV, and the American Legion. In his spare time he enjoyed gardening. Along with being an avid sports fan, especially football, he enjoyed frequent trips to Vernon Downs. Every day is a gamble. Fergie supported many local sports including sponsoring teams himself.
Fergie is survived by his nieces and nephews, along with several great nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his siblings Francis, Katherine Cook, Florence Havington, and Margaret Randall.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday 10 am at the St. Mary's Church, Cortland, with Father Joseph Zareski presiding. Burial will follow at the St. Mary's Cemetery with military honors.
