Virgil Ray Havens, 94, of Scott, NY passed away May 23, 2014 at home surrounded by his loving family. Born in Taunton, NY May 19, 1920 he was the second child of Reeve Harden and Ethel DeWaters Havens. He served in the Pacific during World War II and was discharged with honor as Staff Sargent from U.S. Air Force in Jan. 1946. He then was employed by Brockway Truck Co., McGraw Paper Box Co.,and retired from NYSDOT in1982. A man who appreciated all of nature, he enjoyed camping, hunting, and fishing and became well known for wood working, caning chairs, and refinishing furniture. He is predeceased by his wife Martha M. Havens, sister Adell Havens Bement, brother Hugh Severn Havens, and son-in-law David J. Thompson. He is survived by his daughter Bonnie L.Thompson, grandchildren Shawne (Brian) Standish, Lance (Debra) Gross, and Jeffrey Thompson; great grandchildren Daniel, Brandon, Jessica, Zachary, Robert, and Tylor; great great grandson Bentley; nieces Karin Havens Clancey and Pamela Bement Macomber, and several grand nieces, grand nephews, and cousins. Calling hours will be held Tuesday, June 3, 2014 1:00 - 2:00 pm with funeral service immediately following at Wright Beard Funeral Home, Cortland, NY.
