Obituary of Elizabeth Ann Murray

Elizabeth [Betty] Murray passed away peacefully June 25 surrounded by her beloved family at her son’s home in Bloomington Indiana. She moved to Indiana to live with her son Joe ten years ago, prior to that she lived in Cortland for over 45 years and had a cottage on Little York Lake for more than 30 years which was one of her favorite places.
Betty was born February 19, 1924 in South Bend Indiana and was the oldest of three children of William and Elizabeth Adelsperger. She graduated from St. Joseph’s Academy also in South Bend. Betty married John M. Murray on December 1, 1945 at St. Joseph Church.
They moved to Cortland in 1964. Her husband was the late JMMurray for whom the Murray Center was named, they were married over 25 years. He predeceased her in 1973. Her brother William Adelsperger passed away in 2000, and her sister Joan Dwyer Vliek in 2012. She leaves behind her cherished children William [Barbara] Murray of Commerce Township, MI, Patty [John] Eves of Cortland, Mary [Jackie Miladin] Murray of Otisco, Joan Murray of North Syracuse and her youngest son Joseph Murray of Bloomington, IN. She also leaves grandchildren Michael, Megan and Jack Eves and nieces Kathy and Kelly Adelsperger of Granger, Indiana and Kerry [David] Stephens of New Castle, IN. She also has several nieces and nephews in Michigan.
Betty was a long time member of the Board of Directors of Catholic Charities of Cortland helping them establish the Christmas basket program which helps the working poor of our community. She also worked with her husband and many other volunteers in the community to help the Murray Center become the humanitarian institution it is today. She was part of the Chappell family of employee’s at it’s Cortland Store for more than 20 years.
Calling hours will be held at Wright Beard Funeral from 4pm to 7 pm on Wednesday July 2, 2014. A Mass of Celebration of her life will be held at St. Mary’s Church where she was a member for more than 45 years on Thursday July 3rd at 11:00am with internment at St, Mary’s Cemetery.
