Dear Dr. Garcia and family, I only just learned of your husband's passing. The tribute in the Cortland Standard by your son was descriptive of a wonderful husband and father with total devotion and love for you and your family. And, may I humbly add, his many colleagues condolences reflect an individual who was truly respected and accomplished in his field. I am sure that his presence among them will be sorely missed. At this difficult time, may the good Lord grant you and yours peace of heart and mind. My very sincere and deep sympathy to you and your family.

Dear Garcia Family:
As a manager at the National Academy of Sciences I had the pleasure of working with Ephrahim for the past five years on Army panels. At our meetings he would often brag about his brilliant wife, "the doctor" and he would always book the first plane home after the meeting, saying he needed to get back to his family. He would keep the whole panel in stitches with his sly devilish wit and on their toes with his brilliant observations. I found an email from him recently where he told me I needed to hide all the panel alcohol from another panel member (my father, who was also on the panel). Ephrahim will be sorely missed. I know that his light and example of how to live a full life shines on in those he loved the most and I am praying for your healing. Beyond just healing, I am praying that his memory will continue to make you laugh out loud and continue to bring you and those you love great joy.
Best regards,
Liza Hamilton

Our heartfelt condolences on Ephrahim Garcia’s passing. The staff at the National Research Council’s (NRC) Laboratory Assessments Board have known Ephrahim since 2009 when he was appointed to the NRC’s Army Research Laboratory Technical Assessment Board’s (ARLTAB) Panel on Air and Ground Vehicle Technology. He served with great enthusiasm and dedication; and his technical insights greatly benefited the panel and the board. Since 2013 he was appointed as the chair of the successor NRC ARLTAB’s Panel on Mechanical Science and Engineering at the Army Research Laboratory as well as a member of the ARLTAB. The board members, the panel members, and the staff will greatly miss Ephrahim’s enthusiasm, sense of humor, and technical insights.

It was great sadness for us to learn the death of Prof. Garcia. I am a Ph.D candidate in Harbin Institute of Technology. Last year, Prof. Garcia visited our university and gave us a wonderful speech, and then discussed the future improvement on our subjects. As a scholar he gave us a lot of inspiration in the scientific research on smart materials and structures. Although we only met him once, we knew Prof. Garcia was a great person and a great teacher. We will never forget him and the time we spent together.
My deepest sympathy to all the family.

Several days ago, an e-mail from Prof. Dan Inman suddenly popped out. That e-mail gave us an absolutely shocking news that our beloved friend Professor Garcia has left us. My interactions with Ephrahim lasted over 20 plus years. Ephrahim was intelligent and have achieved greatly in his research. Just a month ago, I was communicating with him over e-mail on some of his future plan. He even mentioned that if there is anything he and I can work together on Taiwan's National Energy Program since I am now the CEO for that program.
Our research community has lost a great man who have contributed so much to the professional field. Many of us have lost a great friend as we will never be able to hear his wisdom again. As a member of the SMS board, I must say our board has lost our leader. Chinese saying "哲人日已遠 典型在夙昔 (A great man is gone and the model he left will last forever)" can slightly express our deepest reflection on Professor Garcia. My deepest sympathies to Ephrahim's family.

I have woken up everyday since I heard the news of Ephrahim's passing thinking about him. Very few people in my life have affected me as much as he did. As my graduate adviser, he provided me with lessons far beyond those expected in an academic setting. During my time at Cornell, we would often meet over coffee, and the conversations invariably diverged from research to discussions about our families. He had a way of making his students feel like part of his family, which is why we all feel so heart broken right now. His warmth and dedication to his students has provided me a strong foundation on which to build my career. I am sure that his other alumni feel the same. He will forever be a model for me professionally, but will live on for me as a man who seemed to keenly understand how to balance his excitement for his work with his devotion and love for his family. His passing has left a hole for me that will not be soon filled.

I was stunned to hear of my cousin's death, so soon after I was stunned to hear of his stroke. As adults, we drifted apart into our own busy lives. I hadn't spoken to him in quite some time and only barely know his wife, and don't know their children at all. You have my deepest sympathies. I cannot even imagine your pain.
I have been reflecting on him since the news of his death reached me and the memories came flooding back from wherever our brains store important things to remember. We studied together for the NY State Algebra Regents in the 9th grade. We played in a band together and I still remember him asking me if his bass line for The Who's Won't get Fooled Again was even close to being right! We went canoeing together down the chilly Deleware River, we shared the conversations teenage boys have, covering all the topics typical of those formative years.
I am sorry to all who loved him for your loss. May you come to terms with his tragic death.

His brilliance and yet kindness immediately struck me. We used to meet regularly in conferences. He was an amazingly knowledgeable person. His knowledge was far beyond technical matters. I will share a small story. When we were in high school, he was both a star student and a star athlete. He had a "cool dude" air about him that comes with being on the football team. The last time I saw him was at a high school reunion. He told me he was a college professor and gave me an amused smile (I'm sure you know the one), that said "can you believe I am an academic"? which I supposed seemed out of character for the "dude" I knew in high school. Of course, I had no trouble believing, he was always intelligent and motivated. But I will never forget that smile he gave me that night or his good nature.
