Dr. Jonathan W. Harrington, Ph.D., 73, passed away unexpectedly at Cayuga Medical Center, Ithaca, N.Y. on Sunday, November 16, 2014. He was born in Watertown, N.Y. on July 2, 1941, the son of Dr. Edwin I. Harrington II and Catherine Brown Harrington. Jonathan graduated from Watertown High School, Class of 1959, earned his B.S. with Honors in Geology from St. Lawrence University in 1964, and a Ph.D. in Geology from Cornell University in 1968. He was a faculty member in the newly-established Department of Geology, University of Calgary, Alberta (Canada) from 1969-1976. He conducted research in the Northern Rocky Mountains, Northwest Territories and Arctic Islands, as well as research projects throughout the Northeastern U.S. Jonathan and family returned to the U.S. in 1976 where he established a Consulting Business (Harrington Associates Geologists), and taught part-time at SUNY Cortland and Mansfield University (P.A.). Eventually, Jonathan devoted full-time to his consulting business. Several of his clients were with him for more than 30 years. Jonathan held professional licenses to practice Geology in New York, Florida and Wisconsin. He was a member of the Geological Society of America (GSA), American Institute of Professional Geologists (AIPG), Paleontological Research Institute (PRI) and the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology.
Jonathan is survived by his wife, Linda Greene Harrington, a son Eric P. (Sandra) Harrington, a daughter, Dr. Laura C. Harrington (Samuel Henson), as well as a beloved grandson, Colin Jonathan Harrington. He is also survived by his brother Edwin I. (Carol) Harrington III and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Memorial services will be held at Wright-Beard Funeral Home, 9 Lincoln Avenue, Cortland N.Y. on Saturday, November 22, 2014 at 1 p.m. Calling hours will be held from 12-1 p.m. prior to the service.
