To Gary's family --
I have just discovered Gary's death -- almost 6 years ago, in 2015. I was a good friend of Gary's in 1961 -62, when we took many of the same classes at Cortland and wrestled on the same team. While I was always a substitute wrestler (or JV), Gary won the NYS championship at his weight - 1961-62. I am so sorry to hear of his death! John V Knapp

Gary and my teams wrestled often. His teams were always competitive. Our styles were the same, Leg Wrestling.
Our teams wrestled to the finals at the class B wrestling tournament in 1991.
I last saw him at the Fall Section III banquet at Borio's. We talked and Remembrance of the past and of course wrestling.
My condolence to a great selfless person who dedicated his life not only to youth but to his country and community. Ron Roch

I am saddened to hear of Gary's passing. My deep sympathy to his loved ones.
Gary was one of my favorite teammates at Cortland. We roomed together during the 4I Tournament. When we returned to the hotel, after having placed 4th, Gary decided to pin his medal on his boxer shorts. We sure had fun.
It was great seeing and visiting with him at the Hall of Fame Induction.
I'm looking for a reunion with Ackley and Gary-Up There.

I had Dill for Driver's Ed and graduated in '72 when Dill took the team to an undefeated season. I'm still a wrestling fan and loved seeing Dill on the sidelines. You don't need to ask too many people before you realize the extent of respect that Dill has earned over the years. That was the nature of the man. He has left his mark forever on Cortland High School and made the world a better place for being in it. I'll end with my heartfelt sympathy to his family and close friends at his loss and with this quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson:
"To laugh often and much; To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; To appreciate beauty, to find the best in others; To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded."

Coach dillingham came up to me one day when I was playing basketball at lunch. He came up to me and asked if I have ever wrestled before, I said no I play basketball. He than said would you want to try it out and I just flat out didn't want to and he said you would love it. Later when I was in 11th I decided I would try wrestling just to get in good shape. Once I won my first match I fell in love with the sport and to this day I love wrestling. Coach dillingham was right that I would love it and wish I started when he asked me too. This man was a great man, we will all miss him. Thanks for the help!

Mr. Dillingham was one of the greatest teachers I had in high school! I always looked forward to drivers Ed class, not just because I got to drive but also because he always let us listen to the radio. He always had 50s and 60s music playing which my mom made me listen to growing up(I was born in 1973) and which i had grown to love at that point. I never knew a calmer teacher and by what class he taught he should have been the most on edge instructor in the school but he always kept his cool! Cortland high school and the world lost a wonderful man. I am just glad he was doing what he loved! RIP Mr. Dillingham! May God be with you and your family and take you to your wrestling team in heaven!

I remember my first varsity match as a freshman and Dill's coaching advice, "Stoney, just try not to get pinned." I think I lasted 45 seconds. Dill stood by me and the other boys and helped guide us into the young men we became.
My favorite remembrance was when he arranged to have us wrestle at Peru who had over one hundred consecutive wins and we knocked them off. He was so proud of that accomplishment.
I'm sorry I cannot be at his service due to a family illness but I wanted his family to know how much we admired Dill as his wrestlers. I also ended up coaching wrestling during my time as a teacher in Glens Falls, NY, and modeled my coaching on what I learned from Dill.
He will be missed.

I would have probably walked through fire if Dill had told me it would make me a better wrestler. He was a great coach, a wonderful man and huge inspiration to me. I am nearing the end of my wrestling coaching career and I have often reflected on memories of his leadership and sense of humor when my team needs some direction. I am very fortunate to have spent some time with him last fall at a tournament in the SRC Arena. My deepest condolences, he will be missed.
