Philip James Thurston, 72, of Cortland, NY, passed away at his home on Friday, April 17th after several years of failing health. Philip was born March 30th, 1943, to Charles Elwood and Madelyn Dorothy Stanton Thurston. He was a graduate of Sayre (PA) High School and a veteran of the U.S. Army. He had lived in Cortland for the past 40 years. Prior to his retirement, "Phil" was co-owner of the Thurston Travel Agency with his late wife, Nyla. The couple enjoyed travel, antiquing, hunting, fishing and many other outdoor activities. His wife, parents and a brother, Vincent F. Thurston, of Athens, PA, preceded Phil in death. He is survived by his children, Debra Smith of Cortland, NY; Scott (Brenda) Thomas of DeRuyter, NY; Wayne (Crissy) Thurston of Peoria, AZ; Caren West of Phoenix, AZ, and family friend, Mark Stanton. Surviving grandchildren are Jessica, Heather, Mackenzie, Zack, Christopher, Elizabeth, Keith, Emily, Brittany and Teri. Two great-grandchildren are Savannah and Brandon, who was a special buddy to his "Poppa", and will miss him. Phil is also survived by three brothers: Charles R. (Heidi) Thurston of Kannapolis, NC; Alfred S. Thurston of Sayre, PA.; Robert V. (Deanna) Thurston of Milan, PA., and numerous nephews and nieces. A graveside service will be held 11:00 a.m., Monday, April 27th at Glenwood Cemetery in Homer, NY. A military honor guard will attend.
