Eunice’s Song
A Eulogy
Thank you all for coming. Mom would simply love the idea of getting together with everyone so she could enjoy the fellowship, but today she’s having another get together with some folks she hasn’t seen for quite a while. So with that in mind, this seems a pretty good opportunity for us to celebrate her very special life and say all those things we love about her without the risk of making her feel the least bit uncomfortable.
Let me begin by saying that Mom’s spirit spoke to everyone she met. Each of us has our own personal appreciation for who she was and this is how she spoke to me….
There is a story of a composer who was asked to write a song that would capture the essence of a well-known personality. The song was to be played as this celebrity made her way from her seat in the audience to the podium where she was to receive a prestigious award for her notable lifelong career. As the story goes, her name was called and as she walked to the podium the beginning strains of the music began to build becoming lovelier with each step. The song was beautiful and to all who knew her it seemed to perfectly capture who she was. So much so that the composer was asked how he had created such a masterpiece. He paused and after a few moments of reflection, smiled and answered; “I only used the good notes”.
God says that all things work together for good, to them that love God, to them who are called according to His purpose.
Romans 8:28 was Mom’s “life verse”. There has been a blue plaque with those words on her kitchen wall for as long as I can remember. It still hangs there today, and you may wonder how many times she might have looked at that plaque when she was troubled and needed the solace of its promise, but I don’t think she really looked at it very often; she didn’t need to. Her life was a living example of its message. I actually believe she put it on the kitchen wall as a reminder for us children. She wanted us to trust God and not live our lives fretting about things, but for me, the best reminder was watching her.
Many of you know I had the privilege of writing down Mom’s memories and in our many conversations it became apparent that she always, always saw her experiences as positive. You know, there are some people who dwell on the negative... Each ache and disappointment is right at the tip of their tongue; but not for my mom. Very few knew how much adversity Mom overcame, or for that matter, how much adversity she couldn’t overcome because she always had a good word to say. Her life was not easy or always comfortable, yet she spoke of blessings and joy.
Each of our lives is a mix of happiness and disappointments. From our earthly perspective we tend to label them as either good times or bad times, but in light of the way my Mom lived her life I have to ask myself, does God really see it that way?
In one of our conversations we discussed what Heaven would be like. I proposed that when that time came, she might find herself running up the lane in Maryland where she grew up, perhaps there would be a picnic ready under her climbing tree and those she loved would be waiting for her there. She smiled and said she liked that picture so I recorded it in the last chapter of her book.
We all have ideas of what heaven will be like. Most agree that it will contain all the elements of a perfect creation, even music. God clearly promises us that he will give us new name and put a song in our heart. I believe He has been writing “the” perfect song in Mom’s heart all of her life. She simply believed His promise that everything works together for good.
When I think of Mom running toward her heavenly home I imagine her Savior’s clarion voice calling her name, her infirmities falling by the way, her face shining with His love, her feet, beautiful and swift, and a song filling the air becoming lovelier with each stride. Its Eunice’s song, composed by the one who loved her most, and above the melody I hear a still small voice saying “I only ever used the good notes my darling”… “Welcome home”.
My mother lived her song for us to see. She lived it and helped us believe. As a child I noticed her feet always ran swiftly toward the voice of her Savior. As an adult her encouraging words, her peaceful trust and joy, even in her hospital bed, were to me such beautiful music. I know many of you noticed these things too, and what a joy it will be to actually hear her complete and perfect song when we greet her in heaven. She’s there. She’ll be waiting. There’s some people she’d like us to meet.

They affected many lives and were always very gracious to us. We were there neighbors for a few years. I know it's hard to lose a loved one, we lost my mom this last summer and it's been a little harder than I anticipated but I know she's in a better place and your mom has just joined her. Hope you all are doing well ......blessings to your family's. We will keep you in our prayers during this time.

Thanks to all who participated in Eunice's memorial service. Nate Cobb did an excellent job and I want you all to know that it was exactly what she would have wanted. Thanks to all who came and to those who shared memories. Eunice would be so thankful that her family came together in such a beautiful way to give God the glory for the legacy she was able to leave through Him. He certainly did a fine work in this lady .....I hope that He will remind me of all she has taught me and will help me to become more like her. I am thankful for our friendship and for the many times we got to spend together..I will miss her.
