May 9, 2016.
James Yaman's passing was a sad day for his family, friends and all of those lives he touched. He was a cousin but we affectionately referred to him as "Uncle Jimmy". During our childhood it was exciting to see him and as adults being able to spend time together was special. He was a gracious host and our last visit in September 2015 was a memorable one.
I continued the family tradition by calling him on his birthday, May 9th, which means my condolences are late.

I was 12 years old when I met Jim in about 1966 when my mother, Beverly Joyce, worked for him as a salesman. Jim was,as everyone who met him found out,very dedicated and caring person. I admired his drive, integrity and charisma. After graduation from Hi School I moved from the area.In 1999, I was going to be in the Cortland area for a visit and called his office to ask him out for lunch with my wife and son. In his typical way he turned the tables on us and ended up taking us to dinner at Rosalies in Skaneateles. We had a most wonderful time and it was as if we'd never missed a day. My wife and son had a most memorable afternoon and evening with him and came to understand why I talked about him to them so often. I will miss him very much.

To paraphrase my good friend, Monique, "I could go on and on..." Jim was a blessing to me, my family, the greater Cortland community. I imagine that he's enjoying coffee with his family and friends who have left this earth already.
Aren't we fortunate to have had Jim in our lives.

Jim was a person with a great heart. He was a generous, kind, loving, and caring person. I met James when I was a faculty at Ithaca College in the early 90's . Since then we remaind good friends. Although I left Ithaca 20 years ago, every time I went back to upstate NY, the first thing I used to do was visiting him. He had in his heart big love for Lebanon and his relatives who probaly met once or twice during his entire life. He used to tell me, Elias please when you go to Ain Dara (the town of his ancestors) say hello to my cousins.
Jim will be greatly missed. My wife Nada And I offer Dottie and his all children and their families our most sincere condolences. We are sure he is in Heaven where he will rest in peace.

Words fail when trying to sum up the life of a man as accomplished as Jim Yaman. And no amount of expressions of sorrow will suffice. But, at the end, this is all we are left with--words, so we do the best we can.
Jim was one of my best friends although our acquaintance lasted for only eight short years. We talked often, some weeks we conversed daily. Our conversations covered a wide range of topics and often centered on Lebanon, the homeland of both our parents. We marveled at how much we had in common.
I know that Dottie, Jim's family and friends will miss him mightily. Be assured I will also miss those conversations, insights and the visits we had when I came to Cortland. A more generous and gracious host cannot be found.
Please accept my, and my wife Lorrie's, deepest condolences for your loss. He will be greatly missed.

RIP Jimmy
He did not mind that I called him Jimmy.
I had the utmost respect for Mr.Yaman and he was in my mind Mr.Cortland.
I only got to know Mr. Yaman for 22 years and we became friends. He knew all of the Sopp family (4 brothers and 2 sisters) who also came to America from Lebanon in the early 20th Century. There were other families - Ferris, Joseph, Abdallah, Calale ,Koury, Hobbie, and dozens more.
The Lebanese families were a Community within a Community. Directly related or not they shared a common bond.
A few years ago Jim Yaman and Harry Calale organized a reunion for all the still living family members. They came from all over the Country. It was so successful they had another one the following year.
My cousin Norman J. Hobbie wrote two books about the First Hundred Years in America for his and other Lebanese families.
Jim Yaman, Harry and Norman, leaders in their own communities and among other outstanding 'cousins', all first generation and proud to be Americans.
Jim personified the basic family values along with the culture from the old country.
Condolences and Best Wishes to the Yaman Family from Mike and my sister Saleamie.

As the Town of Homer Historian, I benefited from being befriended by Jim. Few people know that he paid for the installation of a handicapped-accessible restroom at The History Center at Key Bank in Homer. I was more than happy to research and write for him an article on the connection between the Homer Academy and the American University at Beirut, which he paid to have published as a full-page "ad" in The Cortland Standard. Most of all, I will miss dropping in at his office to reminisce about local history, which he enjoyed so much. Finally, I am so pleased that he got to see the biography written by his granddaughter. It is clear that he valued family and the legacy that he left to Central New York. He left his mark on area communities. This will serve as a constant reminder of this remarkable man. I am grateful that his life and mine intersected. I ask his family to accept my heartfelt condolences.

Perhaps this poem expresses this life well-lived best:
What is Success?
To laugh often and much;
To win the respect of intelligent people
and the affection of children;
To earn the appreciation of honest critics
and endure the betrayal of false friends;
To appreciate beauty;
To find the best in others;
To leave the world a bit better, whether by
a healthy child, a garden patch
or a redeemed social condition;
To know even one life has breathed
easier because you have lived;
This is to have succeeded.
~Ralph Waldo Emerson
Love never dies and our loved ones are never far from us because they have become part of us and everything around us. You'll remember them in lessons you've learned from them and will carry on. You'll hear their voices in the back of your mind like whispers on the wind or in songs on the radio. You'll see them in nature's beauty whether it's a sunset, or tree, or bird, beast, or landscape. The physical body has been shed and is no longer with us, and for this, we mourn. But the energy and the soul of the man you loved so well and who gave so much has begun a new journey. He's left a lovely earthly legacy and his soul remains in the heart of those who loved him.
My thoughts are with you all as you grieve his loss in this physical world. Take comfort in your fond memories and knowledge that is remains with you in spirit.

I am so very sorry to hear the loss of James Yaman. I have worked with his son Paul Yaman for many years. I would answer calls to Jim almost everyone morning for Paul, I can hear his voice now. He lived a long, wonderful life and will be missed dearly. He had a caring family by his side always and was a truly happy man. It always amazed me to see him working full time, driving around and walking up Main Street during lunch. You will be missed but never forgotten. Jim Yaman was a huge part of our community.

It was a sad day for me to hear that Jim Yaman had passed away. For all the years I worked in real estate and those last years at Yaman Real Estate I was privileged to work with Jim. He was of course my broker, mentor and friend. Since I left NY and moved to GA. I looked forward to my visits back to NY. I always stopped in to visit with Jim. He never changed and was always gracious and continually thanked me for my contributions to the Yaman Team. Years after I left he still would go out of his way to thank me and wish me well. He will be missed. His love for Cortland and his heritage was well known. Nancy and I extend our condolences to his family and know that Yaman Real Estate will be a living legacy of the man who started out with humble means to achieve wealth that he sowed back into the community that had blessed him.

The Cortland Youth Bureau would like to extend our condolences to the Yaman family. We hope that time and memories will help lessen the burden of their sorrows, and that they can draw some measure of comfort knowing what impact he has made on the Corltand community.
When our staff sat down with Mr. Yaman in 2012, we asked what motivated him to give back to the community. He simply responded by saying "It's not about giving back, it's more about just sharing what I have." Mr. Yaman will always be remembered by the CYB staff as a mentor, generous, caring and loving man !!!
