Obituary of Salome P. Shutt
Please share a memory of Salome to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Salome P. Shutt was surrounded by her family when she went to be with the Lord on April 1, 2016 at Cortland Park Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. Salome was born September 5, 1922 in Lewistown, PA. She was the twelfth child born out of thirteen to the late Harry A. Harbst and Nettie Mae Riegle.
Salome attended local schools in the Lewistown area and worked in woolen mills making wool blankets for our servicemen. Upon moving to the Cortland area with her family, Salome worked at local Five and Dime stores on Main Street with the last one being J.J. Newberry.
She was a dedicated mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who enjoyed knitting, crocheting, needlework and collecting elephants. Salome always said she would have one in the back yard if she could and was known to many as "The Elephant Lady". She often wore her Elephant Lady baseball cap when walking. Salome also enjoyed making Pennsylvania Dutch Pot Pie for her family and often told people that she was a Pennsylvania Dutch lady from a family of thirteen. Her kind and loving heart and soul will be missed by all.
Salome is survived by her children Melvin "Butch" (Patricia Parker), daughter Betty (Michael Bentley), her youngest sister Beulah Aurand of McVeytown, PA, grandchildren Susan, Byron (Laurie), Michael (Sherry), Jason and Allison (GJ), several great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Salome was predeceased by her husband Raymond in 1979, daughter Linda in 1996 and grandson Christopher in 2015.
The family would like to thank the Whispering Pines nurses at Cortland Park, with a special heartfelt thank you to Kim.
The family will receive friends at the Wright Beard Funeral Home on Tuesday, April 5, 2016 from 5pm to 7pm at 9 Lincoln Ave, Cortland, New York. A graveside service for family will be held at the Scott Union Cemetery.
