Joseph John “Joey” Hayes, 39, of Phoenix, AZ and formerly of Cortland, NY, passed away May 16, 2016 in Phoenix AZ. Born in Cortland, NY, Joe was a son of John and Joanne DeSanta Hayes. Joseph attended Dryden High School. While a member of the wrestling team, he participated in sectionals at Cornell. After receiving his GED, Joe started his own lawn mowing business: Hayescape. He went on to complete the cosmetology program at Phillips Hairstyling Institute. Later, he was employed by Buckbee-Mears and the JM Murray Center. He also worked as a salesman. Joe was a cancer survivor. He was an avid Arizona Cardinals fan and sported his teamʼs cap daily. He enjoyed volunteering at Cortland Loaves and Fishes, where he made many friends. Joe will be remembered for his generosity, kindness, and compassion for others. He will be truly missed by all who knew and loved him. Joe was predeceased by his sister, Ann, his grandparents: Libbie and John De Santa, Vera and Frank Hayes, and an uncle, George De Lorenzo. He is survived by his parents; brother, Tony Hayes; aunt, Marilyn DeLorenzo; uncle, Frank (Barbara) Hayes; great aunt, Dorothy DeSanta, many cousins, and a very dear family friend,Angela Knight. Relatives and friends may call Thursday, June 2, 2016 from 2 to 4 pm at the Wright-Beard Funeral Home, 9 Lincoln Ave., Cortland. At the conclusion of calling hours, a sharing of memories will take place. A reception will follow at Cortland Loaves and Fishes. Burial will be private at a later time at St. Maryʼs Cemetery.
