Obituary of Barbara M Purchas

Barbara M. Purchas, 81, formerly of Homer and Tully, passed away October 23. Born in Cortland to William and Alice Masterson, she graduated Homer High School in 1953 and attended Central City Business Institute in Syracuse. Barbara was a bookkeeper for Cortland Country Club and Tallmadge Tire Service. Later she served on the board at The Elizabeth Brewster House in Homer and the 1890 House in Cortland. For 33 years she volunteered at Cortland Regional Medical Center and enjoyed being the “cart lady,” pushing the hospitality cart and interacting with patients and staff. Barbara was predeceased by her husband, John B. Purchas, long-time companion Robert C. Anderson, and stepsons Frederick A. Purchas and John B. C. Purchas. She is survived by her brother, James H. Masterson; daughter Jerri Anne Custer, son Joe LaPlant and their families; cousins, a niece, and nephew. Favorite past-times of Barb’s included gardening, bird watching, walking, traveling and a good game of poker or pitch. She adored her grandchildren and great grandchildren and loved spending time with them. Barb was a compassionate and supportive mother, honest friend, and devoted spouse. Calling hours are Saturday, October 29, 12-2PM with a funeral service immediately following at Wright-Beard Funeral Home, 9 Lincoln Ave., Cortland. Burial to follow at Cortland Rural Cemetery.
