Dur, I never got to thank you. And I’m sad to say that I am thanking you at the time of hearing of your passing. The years have flown by…and during that time I thought of you often.
There is an old saying. “When the student is ready, the teacher will appear.” I believe that adage. You came into my life at a time when I was searching for a direction. And your wisdom provided that direction. You helped to change my life in ways that I would have never imagined. Your leadership, support and unwavering belief in my abilities were the moving force that allowed me to succeed in sales in your Harvard Mutual Agency. And later on, when I began my own agency and other businesses, I often thought back during tough times, to those words of encouragement that you so often offered.
Thank you for being the best teacher I ever had. You changed my life for the better.

Dear Kellie and Sherri - You may not remember me, but I used to live at 10 Ferndale Lane, and babysat the two of you for several years. I was so, so sorry to learn of your father's death. He and your mother were wonderful people. They were very kind to me, and I enjoyed being with you, and them. I remember when we all went to Ocean City in New Jersey, spending lots of time on the beach and in the water.
Your mom was a very caring person, and she and I used to spend time together with the two of you at Yaman Park (remember those high calorie pizza frittes they used to serve?).
My favorite story about your dad was one that your mom told me one summer afternoon when she called and said she needed to go to Pennsylvania right away, could I please come to the house and look out for the two of you while she was away. Apparently your dad had locked the keys to his corvette in the car, somewhere at a Pennsylvania Turnpike rest stop. Instead of asking the police for assistance, which would have been a tad embarrassing for him, he asked your mom to drive all the way to Pennsylvania and back with a spare set of keys! Your mom had tears in her eyes from laughing so hard, but made me promise not to tell your dad, or let him know in any way, that I knew the reason for your mom's emergency trip.
The first wine I ever drank was at your house. Almaden vineyard, red wine. Your parents were way ahead of the curve on California wines, appreciating it several years before it caught on big.
It was always a joy to watch our for the two of you, and it was always a joy to be with your parents. My deepest condolences to you both. It seems we never have enough time to spend with those we love, and there's never enough time to prepare oneself to say goodbye. My thoughts and prayers are with you both.
With love,
Alesia

Although I only met Durwood 5 years ago, when we became business partners, we quickly became friends, and he felt like someone I had known my entire life. A truly kind and giving person, he spent countless hours teaching me everything he possibly could about all he had learned about business and sales throughout his life. He always had the perfect thing to say in any situation, to lift you up, encourage you, and inspire you to be your best. Such a wonderful sense of humor, and a truly unique, and special person. He gave so much of his free time to helping me in the last few years, and for that, I am eternally grateful. I will truly miss our afternoon phone calls and weekly meetings, and just having the pleasure of talking with him and being his friend. It was a true honor to know you Durwood, and I can never thank you enough for all that you have done for me.
Rest in Peace, my friend, I will truly miss you.

My sincerest condolences to Kellie, Sherri. Your father was a fine man, and I know you will feel his loss. But know that he will always be with you in spirit, watching over you, and smiling at the beautiful girls he brought into this world.

I will always feel grateful that Uncle Durwood tolerated my invasion of his home for a whole year. Aunt Marge had great compassion on me and I was blessed that my Uncle appeased her wishes. I realize that it wasn't easy and that many sacrifices were made on my behalf. With huge admiration, my mother also appreciated his friendship. It is a great commentary on his life that he will be missed by many people. I believe he is now with all his family and friends who passed on before him which is a joyful thought. I am sorry for those he left behind who will miss him, especially you, Kellie and Sherri, and your families. Love to you all .....Linda

I'm so sad to hear this. My mom told me Uncle Dur was sick and I wanted so badly to talk to him. I waited too long...
Uncle Durwood will always hold a special place in my heart. He made me laugh as a little girl and joked and told me lots of stories. "Killer" the alligator still makes me think twice about going in the woods. I absolutely loved when he and Aunt Marge came to visit in Escanaba. I miss them both and think of them often. I'm so sorry Sherri and Kelly .

Jack Buttino introduced me to the "Wood". He was my first employer as an agent for American Progressive Insurance following my graduation from Broome Tech. He was a unique, warm person who I was proud to call my friend. May God bless his soul -- he will remain in my prayers.

I am so very deeply saddened. What a true friend he was. Durwood was my biggest fan, and I his. He traveled with our Route 66 Band countless of times. MC'd our shows. Gave us praises to audiences in the Pocono's and throughout NY that seemed fitting for Nashville's elite. As a Route 66 Band member, we owe him so much for believing in us. And our love for singing and performing, became his love.
He was ridiculously funny. We just shook our heads sometimes as he masterminded crazy things to say or do. And those RED SOCKS!?!?! And that speaking voice over the mic! You've got to check out our Christmas CD, where he is narrating "Twas the night before Christmas". He was so honored to be a part of it.
Oh how I'll miss you Durwood. It doesn't seem right that I can't call to catch up.
Thanks for all the memories.....and boy do I have many, as I'm sure the rest of the band does.
Rest in Peace my friend! I'll be talking to you still......towards the heavens. A true friend.....Marie Petry
