I met Essie as a member of the SUNY Cortland Alumni Board. She was a force to be reckoned with. She held us all to a higher standard and led by example. Our Board and the College were the better for her dedication, passion, dignity and steadfast loyalty to our beloved alma mater. I will always remember her swims at Raquette Lake, her lovely daughter Kathy and her unwavering support of students and the entire Cortland community.
May the entire Vangeli family be strengthened by the amount of people whose lives she positively impacted during her lifetime.

Tina and Lindy,
I am very sorry to hear of your mom's passing. What memories I have of her umpiring the slow pitch softball games and visiting her on the lake after the games. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. It is not easy losing a parent, but I am sure you will find comfort in all of the memories you have of her.

To the Vangeli family,
My heart goes out to you all during this very difficult time. I am so sorry for your loss. Essie was an awesome woman who I will always remember fondly. The woman who dedicated her life to kids, who taught me and hundreds of children to swim, play by the rules (softball and life), and always had that smile and quick wit about her. To me, Essie is a legend who cannot be replaced. I will never forget her. May your wonderful memories help ease the pain you are all feeling right now. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

Essie certainly lived her life with a full-throttle involvement style. An approach that benefited so many around her. I was one of those recipients as a member of the Cortland Swim Team for many years. She was passionate about the program and gave a huge amount of her time toward its success. All of her children were involved in the program and every one of them was a joy to get to know....she leaves a deep, meaningful legacy behind. Thank you Essie!

I was very sad when I learned of Essie's passing. She was such a kind person and I will always remember her bright smile. I have wonderful memories of Essie volunteering in the Alumni Office at SUNY Cortland at Reunion Weekend and as a member of the Alumni Association Board of Directors. I have often thought of her over the years and will continue think of her as the years go by. I wish Essie's family and friends peace during this most difficult time.

Dear Vangeli Family,
Essie was a Super Mom! I know, because I had one, too, in Ann Bertini. Essie was always upbeat, supportive, ready for anything, generous and kind. She was a strong family woman, but also welcomed all into her family. She seemed indefatigable most all the time. A loud, laughing and fun mom, Essie was a joy to be around, both when I was a child and as an adult. My parents dearly loved her, and Essie loved back. What a champion of a woman!
Celebrate her wonderful life and try to be even a little like her, and we will all be the better for it!
Respectfully,
Charlie Bertini

Lindy and family, very sorry for your loss. I always enjoyed the positive energy your mom conveyed to all. She made a mark on the world.
My wife swam for Fayetteville-Manlius schools and immediately remarked how she knew who your mom was and how they feared swimming against Cortland.
Our prayers are with you all.

Essie and BJ were always so welcoming to our family every year when we rented a cottage from them on Little York Lake in the Summer with our large, noisy, busy family. We became very close friends with them and their kids. They taught us how to water ski, took us out on their boat, and allowed us free access to their family as we became friends. We were all in and out of each other's houses the entire time we were there as long as we followed the rules and listened to what we were told, which we did-mostly. We swam, ate, played, hung out, and grew up together. It was an awesome way to spend one or two weeks enjoying summer with them while spending time with our Aunt Adelaide and Uncle Art Underwood, who were their close friends as well, It will forever be a cherished part of my child and young adulthood. She will be very missed.
