I was a student of Dr. Waldbauer in the early 70s. There were two biology teachers that influenced my life. When I did my student teaching at Fayetteville Manlius high school in 1974 my master teacher was Warren Petty. Warren had been my own 10th grade biology teacher and was the reason that I was going into teaching biology. Warren was an amazing teacher. I asked him if by any chance he knew Dr. Eugene Waldbauer as Dr. Waldbauer was the other amazing
teacher who inspired me. Warren grinned and with a smile said yes I do know Dr. Waldbauer he was my roommate in college. I was always amazed that these two wonderful men and amazing teachers ‘grew up together’ to become the great influence on my life. I know this comes well after Dr. Waldbauer’s passing. but I believe it’s always important to remind people how wonderful this man was!

I was just telling my husband about my favorite biology professor, Dr. Waldbauer and was saddened to find out about his passing. I attended Cortland from 1970 to 1974 and was lucky enough to take his course, the Taxonomy of Vascular Plants. I had to laugh reading about Dr. Waldbauer's nickname of "Turbo" because he certainly was. I can see him now charging through the woods to find plants to identify and pass on his wonderful knowledge to his students. I still love to identify plants, especially those beautiful spring flowers that we find this time of year. I only wish I could tell him what I difference he made in my life and that I think of him fondly and with admiration. I'm so glad he had a long life with a loving family. God bless you and know your father and grandfather is remembered by this country girl!

Gene Waldbauer was a great man. He was my teacher at Cortland for Zoology and Summer Field Bio at Racquette Lake. He knew everything about everything, or so it seemed to me as a young man. He shared it all with each his students. He walked so damned fast my feet still ache from 1982!. I was lucky to have him as a teacher and I have thought of him many times over the years. I am sorry for your loss.

Very sorry to see this. I can remember spending a few canoe/mountain trips following Dr. Waldbauer up and down several peaks in the Adirondacks while at Raquette Lake with my father. I can still see the college guys trying to keep up with him, most couldn't. I remember him as a dedicated teacher and good friend of my family, My condolences.

Florence and Family
Christal and I were very saddened to hear of Gene's passing. We convey our deepest condolences.
Gene was a genuine Raquette Laker. He loved the lake and it was always a delight to see him puttering around the house or walking down the road wih his walking stick.
He was a tough individual with tremendous resolve. He dealt with his recent health issues and never complained
We will miss him.

Dr. Waldbauer taught me Zoology at SUNY Cortland and then I spent 2 weeks at Raquette Lake trying to keep up with this powerhouse. So much of what I share with my own students can be linked directly back to him. Thank you for your inspiration; you had a profound impact on my life. Rest in peace; you made a huge difference to so many.

Dr. waldbauer was one of my favorite professors at C-St. I had him for field biology and field natural history. I learned a great deal from him which I later passed on to my students at Homer. Our condolences to the entire Waldbauer family.

My condolences to the loving family. Sorry I can't be with you tomorrow.
Dr. Waldbauer was a man of inspiration for so many of us. As a student in many of his classes from 1973-1976, I benefited much from his knowledge, but not until Field Bio at Raquette Lake did I really 'get it'. We can make a difference in this world.
I went on to a career in various levels of government as a biologist/ecologist/environmental analyst via a strong foundation from SUNY Cortland.
More personally, Raquette Lake was an opportunity to interact with the entire Waldbauer family. I will never forget our field trip to Brown's Track Bog, when we enlisted young Eugene (maybe 6 or 8) to take our group picture, and we kept telling him to back up until he fell backwards over a log into the bog. He had a nickname for the rest of the session of as 'One more step Eugene'.
As a member of Bio Club, Dr. Waldbauer (Or Jay Cummings) would often invite us up to Raquette Lake to do KP for other groups, and there was never a hesitation. We considered it a privilege. And thinking back, he started it all at Camp Marion, quite rustically, so many years ago.
I could go on, but can't,
God bless!

I will always remember Mr Waldbauer/Mr Nature as one of the most knowledgeable person I have ever known. If you ever had a question, no matter what topic, he always had an answer.
I will always remember Mr Waldbauer/Mr Nature as a quiet caring person who loved life and his family.
I will always remember Mr Waldbauer/Mr Nature as a traveler, explorer, and who served our country.
If you lived in Cortland you probably saw Mr Waldbauer walking, which he did everyday. I never saw Mr Waldbauer get mad even when Eugene(son) rolled his dad's car back in High School.
It was always a great pleasure when Mr & Mrs Waldbauer use to come out and visit us in California. They were always up for anything even going to a bar with loud music at 10 pm at night. Also going to Vegas and celebrating New Years with us and partying like kids.
I will always remember Mr Waldbauer as Mr Waldbauer. I am blessed to have known him and had a chance to see him last time I was home this past September. I am blessed to have The Waldbauers as friends.
Thank you Mr Waldbauer for ALL you have done and given and you will always be remembered.
Love,
Chris & Shannon Spiess

Dr Waldbauer was a fine gentleman. I saw firsthand his devotion to his family, his students, and the Cortland community. I was glad to call his older children my swim teammates, at both the YMCA and the college teams. My sympathy to his family.
